Role Overview
The Product Engineer III at AAON leads the design, development, and continuous improvement of HVAC products and systems. This high‑level engineering position requires an advanced foundation in mechanical engineering, focusing on design for manufacturing processes, cross‑functional collaboration, and innovation. The role provides support for complex engineering projects and requires complete knowledge of the area of specialization, principles, and practices within the professional discipline.
Responsibilities- Lead the design, validation, and implementation of HVAC products and components.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards, improve product performance, and support manufacturing and field operations.
- Collaborate with cross‑functional teams—including R&D, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain—to ensure product success from concept to production.
- Lead design projects and coordinate the manufacturing process of those products.
- Work with the engineering team to design innovative new products.
- Work closely with sales and design engineering teams to create industry‑relevant products that meet project and company specifications.
- Transform ideas into high‑end products that perfectly meet the needs of customers.
- Create complete product designs using component selection software and 3D modeling tools.
- Research new technologies and apply them to product lines.
- Use industry knowledge to develop unique product ideas.
- Update existing designs for cost reduction, innovative upgrades, efficiency, and more.
- Create models, prototypes, drawings, BOMs, etc.
- Test and validate new designs and updates.
- Keep current on product and component technology improvements and industry trends.
- Work with manufacturing to optimize design for production.
- Troubleshoot customer issues and assist factory personnel with testing and assembly.
- Assist marketing and sales departments with technical training and materials.
- Assist with development of project budget and timelines.
- Maintain product documentation to assure engineering and drafting consistency.
- Consult, design, test, and innovate HVAC solutions for clients of every size and lead projects.
- Develop and execute product development testing plans in support of engineering objectives.
- Guide testing technicians during testing.
- Analyze HVAC systems and equipment to find inefficiencies or malfunctions and create solutions to optimize performance and increase efficiency.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- 5+ years of HVAC related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 5+ years experience with 3D modeling software such as Autodesk Inventor (preferred) or other 3D CAD software (Solid Works, Creo, etc.).
- 5+ years experience with AutoCAD.
- Excellent knowledge of principles and practices of engineering, preferably in the HVAC and manufacturing industries.
- Understanding of thermodynamics, heat transfer, simulations, sound and vibration, and electrical principles.
- Ability to visualize theoretical models and design concepts.
- Excellent analytical and design skills.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Refrigeration and hydronics experience.
- Advanced troubleshooting skills.
- Experience with product lifecycle management (PLM) systems and ERP integration.
- Advanced experience with problem‑solving, time management, and communication skills.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, and industry standards.
- Ability to work efficiently with minimal supervision.
- Familiarity with regulatory compliance and certification processes.
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the position satisfactorily.
This position requires the ability to work in both office and manufacturing environments. The engineer must analyze complex data, make sound engineering judgments, and communicate effectively across departments. Occasional travel may be required to support field operations or supplier visits. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods, manual dexterity to operate computer and testing equipment, visual acuity to read technical drawings and perform inspections, occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds, and the ability to work in a fast‑paced, collaborative environment.
WorkEnvironment
The work is primarily performed in an office setting with regular visits to the manufacturing floor and testing labs. Exposure to HVAC equipment, moderate noise levels, and temperature variations may occur. Safety protocols and personal protective equipment are required in designated areas.
