Amazon Leo is Amazon’s low Earth orbit satellite network, delivering fast, reliable internet connectivity to customers beyond the reach of existing networks.
As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer for Amazon Leo Tooling, you will support the program’s transition from development into stable production. You will develop, design, analyze, and implement custom tooling and equipment required for assembling and testing satellites. You will convert requests from various teams into systems that are easy to use, cost effective, and accurate. Additionally, you will manage projects, estimate costs, and schedule activities.
This is a fast‑paced, intellectually challenging position. You’ll work with leaders across multiple technology areas and must meet relentlessly high standards. You’ll constantly seek ways to improve product performance, quality, and cost, while wearing multiple hats and maintaining strong collaboration.

Key Job Responsibilities- Work with vehicle, manufacturing, integration, and operation teams to define and conceive creative solutions to unique problems.
- Design fixtures, mechanisms, and other types of hardware to support safe, efficient, and reliable testing of satellite components.
- Validate designs using engineering fundamentals, including hand‑calculations and finite element analysis.
- Perform geometric design using 3D CAD (NX) for parts and assemblies and create 2D engineering drawings.
- Manage execution of design, including budgeting, scheduling, and collaboration with manufacturing teams and vendors.
- Work directly with manufacturing and operation teams to commission designs on the production floor.
The Leo Tooling team designs and commissions hard tooling, mechanisms, jigs, and integrated machines used for satellite production. It consists of engineers and support technicians that provide unique, creative solutions on tight timelines.
Basic Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering.
- Minimum 2 years of project management experience, including resource planning, schedule management, project status reporting, and task prioritization.
- Minimum 4 years of experience in mechanical engineering or equivalent experience.
- Minimum 3 years of experience with CAD design of complex systems, including 3D modeling, drawings, and GD&T.
- Minimum 1 year of experience in structural analysis, including hand calculations and finite element analysis.
- Experience working with interdisciplinary teams to execute product design from concept to production.
- Experience with project management of technical projects.
- Strong background in the design of mechanisms, bolted and welded structures, assembly fixtures, alignment fixtures, test fixtures, rigging, and material handling.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering fundamentals.
- Design analysis experience with stiffness/strength, structural dynamics, weldments, and bolted structures.
- Experience designing tooling for aerospace hardware.
- Practical knowledge of manufacturing processes and materials used in assembly tooling.
- Experience with NX 3D modeling and Simcenter 3D FEA simulation.

Benefits & CompensationThe base salary range for this position is $ – $ USD annually. Your Amazon package will include sign‑on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and location.
