itD is seeking a Laser Safety Specialist (Business Operations – Compliance Specialist V) to support Meta's Global Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) organization by ensuring laser and radiation safety compliance across research and product development laboratories. The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in laser and radiation safety, regulatory compliance, and laboratory safety programs, with a proven ability to perform safety assessments, implement corrective actions, and support cross-functional engineering and research teams in maintaining a safe and compliant work environment.

Onsite – Redmond, WA (Travel required to Sunnyvale, Burlingame, Fremont, and other locations as needed.)

Responsibilities- Conduct laboratory inspections to ensure compliance with laser and radiation safety regulations and organizational safety standards.
- Analyze laser, LED, and X-ray safety hazards and assist in developing technical safety requirements for hardware and research environments.
- Review, create, and approve laser and optical safety Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and related documentation.
- Perform laser exposure calculations, optical measurements, power measurements, and X-ray leakage surveys to validate equipment safety.
- Review and approve work completed by external laser service providers and ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
- Investigate safety concerns, identify corrective actions, and collaborate with engineering, research, and EHS teams to implement effective solutions.
- Implement and maintain radiation safety protocols for X-ray generating equipment in accordance with CDPH regulations.
- Support laboratory safety initiatives including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), chemical safety, electrical safety, machine guarding, and other Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) programs.
- Partner with cross-functional teams to establish compliant safety procedures and ensure adherence to laser and radiation safety requirements.
- Travel to support multiple laboratory locations, including Sunnyvale, Burlingame, Fremont, and other business locations as needed.
- Attend regular internal practice community meetings.
- Collaborate with your itD practice team on industry thought leadership.
- Complete client case studies and learning material (blogs, media material).
- Build out material to contribute to the Digital Transformation practice.
- Attend internal itD networking events (in person and virtual).
- Work with leadership on career fast-track opportunities.
- Bachelor's degree in Physics, Optical Sciences, Engineering, Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Physics, or a related discipline (or equivalent Laser Safety Officer/Radiation Safety Officer experience in lieu of degree).
- Minimum 5+ years of experience as a Laser Safety Officer (LSO).
- Strong knowledge of ANSI Z136.1 – American National Standard for the Safe Use of Lasers.
- Experience with IEC 60825, IEC 62471, and FLPPS (21 CFR 1040.10/11) compliance requirements.
- Familiarity with CDPH X-Ray regulations.
- Experience conducting laboratory safety inspections, hazard assessments, and safety investigations.
- Experience performing laser calculations, measurements, and safety evaluations.
- Strong technical documentation, report writing, presentation, and stakeholder communication skills.
- Experience serving as both a Laser Safety Officer (LSO) and Radiation Safety Officer (RSO).
- Experience supporting hardware research, laboratory, or manufacturing environments.
- Proficiency with FDA/CDRH FLPPS, IEC 60825-1, and IEC 62471-1 .
- Strong understanding of laser calculations including MPE, NOHD, and NHZ .
- Experience conducting Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA).
