Overview

Laser Safety Specialist V onsite support to the laser and radiation safety team. The candidate will perform lab inspections, evaluate equipment purchase requirements, review R&D experiments, and perform various laser exposure calculations and measurements. The role ensures appropriate area controls for employees working with lasers and radiation sources and supports the Radiation safety program by implementing the unit plan, performing X-ray leakage surveys, and auditing training and procedures for X-ray generating devices.

The role requires the ability to thrive in a dynamic environment and to work closely with cross-functional teams in research and product settings. The position covers labs in Sunnyvale, Burlingame, Fremont, with possible travel to Redmond, WA, and other locations as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Audit labs for radiation and laser safety compliance
  • Analyze safety hazards and assist in creating requirement specifications for hardware containing hazardous elements such as lasers, LEDs, and X-ray systems
  • Understand and implement laser and optical safety standards such as FLPPS, ANSI Z136.1, IEC 60825, and IEC 62471
  • Create, review, and approve laser and optical hazard-related SOPs
  • Review and approve work by outside laser service technicians
  • Assist in identifying and developing corrective actions and communicating to stakeholders
  • Conduct power, spectral, and temporal measurements for laser and LED sources
  • Implement safety protocols as required by CDPH in the state of California for X-ray generators
  • Perform testing to simulate faults and validate the optical safety of equipment
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with all levels of staff
  • Adapt and innovate procedures to ensure compliance with Radiation and Laser Safety programs
  • Travel to supported labs as needed
  • Support additional EHS programs (LOTO, lab safety, chemical safety, electrical safety, machine guarding, etc.), especially in cross-functional research and product environments
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Physics, Optical Sciences, Engineering, Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Physics, or a related discipline (direct experience as a Laser Safety Officer or Radiation Safety Officer may substitute for degree)
  • Experience in safety investigations, either during development, failure analysis, or related processes
  • Familiarity with multiple radiation sources including X-ray generators, lasers, and LEDs
  • Experience in a technical/engineering role focused on field testing, failure analysis, reliability, or equivalent
  • Familiarity with ANSI Z136.1 – The American National Standard for the Safe Use of Lasers
  • Self-motivated, proactive, multi-tasking with creative and critical thinking capabilities
  • Outstanding communication, report writing, and presentation skills
Preferred qualifications
  • Experience working as an LSO/RSO
  • Experience in hardware research or production environments
  • Ability to influence teams through timely, accurate, and rigorous analysis
  • Experience with IEC 60825, IEC 62471, and ANSI Z136.1 compliance
  • Proficiency with FDA/CDRH FLPPS and IEC 60825-1, IEC 62471-1
  • Expertise with federal reporting requirements (import/export, initial/model change reports, annual reporting)
  • Understanding of performing laser calculations (MPE, NOHD, NHZ) for various laser types and configurations
  • Experience conducting FMEA and Fault Tree Analysis
  • Experience developing methods for laser/optical safety analysis using in-house equipment to reduce cost and improve turnaround time
  • Experience with RF/EMF safety (FCC and IEEE C95.1) and ultrasound safety is a plus
Compensation and benefits

Pay range is $76 - $81 per hour with full benefits available, including paid time off, medical/dental/vision/life insurance, 401K, parental leave, and more. Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. Pay is based on factors including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
