Acoustic Measurement Engineer

The Acoustic Measurement Engineer will join an acoustic design and development team focused on creating outstanding audio user experiences in consumer electronic devices. In this role, you prototype and evaluate new audio technologies, perform detailed acoustic and audio hardware measurements, and collect and analyze data throughout multiple phases of product development. You validate audio performance through measurements and user studies, contribute to product specifications that enable advanced audio features, and collaborate closely with cross-functional teams in software, hardware integration, and user interaction.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive audio and acoustical measurements across acoustical and electrical domains, including frequency response, distortion, impedance, and related parameters.
  • Perform acoustic measurements using Head and Torso Simulators (HATS) in various environments such as anechoic and reverberant test chambers.
  • Test electronics and digital signal processing (DSP) for audio quality, speech intelligibility, signal-to-noise ratio improvement (SNRi), distortion, transfer functions, and other key performance metrics.
  • Create, refine, and follow detailed test procedures to ensure accurate, repeatable, and reproducible measurement results.
  • Present, categorize, and interpret measurement data, providing clear documentation and communication of findings to project stakeholders.
  • Help introduce new test methods and integrate them into the existing data management system to improve efficiency and coverage.
  • Generate, organize, and validate result data in support of projects that operate under tight and fixed timelines.
  • Work in a highly detail-oriented manner to maintain consistency and quality across all testing activities.
  • Maintain a functional, safe, and organized laboratory environment, including identifying and communicating maintenance and improvement needs.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience with audio hardware testing.
  • Strong experience conducting audio and acoustic measurements, including frequency response, distortion, and impedance, across acoustical and electrical domains.
  • Proficiency with audio lab tools such as HATS and measurement microphones.
  • Familiarity with at least some professional audio measurement systems such as Head Acoustics ACQUA, Audio Precision, or Listen Inc Sound Check.
  • Ability to create, follow, and refine test procedures with a focus on repeatability and reproducibility.
  • Effective communication, documentation, and presentation skills to share test plans, results, and recommendations with cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated ownership mindset with a keen attention to detail in all aspects of testing and data handling.
  • Experience with scripting and automation using MATLAB and Python for data analysis and test workflows.
  • Education such as an associate or bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, acoustics, audio technology, or a related field, or equivalent hands-on experience.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Knowledge or strong interest in hearing science and psychoacoustics to better interpret and contextualize testing results.
  • Experience in audio and acoustics, including critical listening skills to evaluate subjective audio quality.
  • Experience with laser displacement measurement tools such as Keyence and Polytec.
  • Exposure to electrical and power measurements related to audio hardware is a plus.
  • Additional scripting experience in MATLAB and Python beyond basic proficiency is considered an advantage.

Work Environment

This is a fully on-site laboratory-based role located in Redmond, WA, with work performed in the lab five days per week and no hybrid option. You will work in specialized acoustic test environments, including anechoic and reverberant chambers, and use professional audio measurement equipment such as HATS, measurement microphones, laser displacement meters, and systems like Head Acoustics ACQUA, Audio Precision, and Listen Inc Sound Check.

The environment is highly technical and detail-oriented, with a strong focus on data quality, safety, and organization in the lab.
