Hardware Reliability Engineer, Amazon Leo - Optical Inter-Satellite Link (OISL)

Job :  | Amazon Kuiper Manufacturing Enterprises LLC

Amazon Leo is an initiative to increase global broadband access through a constellation of 3,236 satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO). Its mission is to bring fast, affordable broadband to unserved and underserved communities around the world. Amazon LEO will help close the digital divide by delivering fast, affordable broadband to a wide range of customers, including consumers, businesses, government agencies, and other organizations operating in places without reliable connectivity.

We are building the next generation of optical interconnect systems, and reliability is at the heart of what we do. We are seeking a Reliability Engineer to join our OISL Reliability team. In this role, you will develop and execute reliability strategies for complex opto-mechanical, electrical, and electro-optical hardware—ensuring products meet qualification and lifetime requirements for the LEO environment. You will work cross-functionally with design, systems, manufacturing, and test engineering teams to build reliability into products from concept through production.

You will have the opportunity to work on state-of-the-art technologies, collaborate with world-class engineers, and make a direct impact on product quality and customer satisfaction.

Export Control Requirement

Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Key job responsibilities
  • Develop, implement, and maintain reliability models and frameworks for electrical, mechanical, and optical components and assemblies;
  • Conduct failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA), fault tree analysis (FTA), and root cause analysis (RCA) for hardware systems and subsystems;
  • Define and execute reliability demonstration testing (RDT), accelerated life testing (ALT), highly accelerated life testing (HALT);
  • Apply reliability growth models, Weibull analysis, and other statistical tools to predict and improve product lifetime;
  • Establish reliability requirements and verification plans for new product development programs;
  • Collaborate with design engineering to implement Design for Reliability (DfR) principles and conduct reliability risk assessments;
  • Collaborate with system-level engineering teams to assess and improve overall system reliability and availability;
  • Investigate field and test failures to identify failure modes, mechanisms, and root causes; drive corrective actions to closure;
  • Develop and maintain reliability documentation including test plans, reports, and specifications;
  • Support qualification and validation activities for components and assemblies;
  • Communicate reliability findings and recommendations to leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, material engineering, mechanical engineering or related fields
  • Industry experience with reliability engineering principles and methodologies, including reliability models (e.g. Weibull), statistical analysis, fault tree analysis, highly accelerated life testing (HALT), highly accelerate stress screening (HASS), accelerated life testing (ALT), and reliability demonstration testing (RDT)
  • Experience with failure analysis techniques and root cause investigation
  • Experience with data analysis and scripting (Python, MATLAB, or equivalent)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree or above in engineering or equivalent
  • Experience with optics, opto-electronics, or optical communication systems
  • Experience with system-level reliability concepts, including reliability block diagrams and system availability modeling
  • Familiarity with industry reliability standards (e.g., Telcordia GR-468, MIL-HDBK-217, MIL-STD-810, JEDEC, IEC 61709)
  • Knowledge of space or LEO environmental requirements (thermal vacuum, radiation, atomic oxygen, out gassing)
  • Prior experience in a hardware reliability or component engineering role within the optical communications or aerospace industry
  • New Product…
