Compensation: $69 - $79 HOURLY
Role Overview This role will primarily support the laser and radiation safety team. Key functions include conducting lab inspections, evaluating equipment purchase requirements, reviewing R&D experiments, and performing laser exposure calculations and measurements. The position is responsible for establishing appropriate area controls for personnel working with lasers and radiation sources. The role also involves supporting the Radiation Safety Program by implementing business unit plans, performing X-ray leakage surveys, and auditing procedures for X-ray generating devices.
This position operates in a dynamic environment and requires collaboration with cross-functional teams in research and product development.
- Audit labs for radiation and laser safety compliance.
- Analyze safety hazards and assist in creating requirement specifications for hardware containing hazardous elements such as lasers, LEDs, and X-ray sources.
- Understand and implement laser and optical safety standards such as FLPPS, ANSI Z136.1, IEC 60825, and IEC 62471.
- Create, review, and approve laser and optical hazard-related Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Review and approve work performed by external laser service technicians.
- Assist in identifying and developing corrective actions and communicating them to stakeholders.
- Conduct power, spectral, and temporal measurements for laser and LED sources.
- Implement safety protocols as required by state regulations for X-ray generators.
- Perform testing to simulate faults and validate the design and optical safety of equipment.
- Support additional EHS programs as needed, including LOTO, lab safety, chemical safety, electrical safety, and machine guarding.
Education:
A Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Optical Sciences or Engineering, Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Physics, or a related discipline is required. Direct experience as a Laser Safety Officer (LSO) or Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) may be considered in lieu of a degree.
Experience:
A minimum of five years of experience as a Laser Safety Officer (LSO) is required. Experience in safety investigations during the development process or failure analysis is also necessary, along with experience in a technical or engineering role focused on field testing, failure analysis, or reliability.
Skills:
Candidates must be proficient with ANSI Z136.1 - The American National Standard for the Safe Use of Lasers. Familiarity with various radiation sources, including x-ray generating machines, lasers, and LEDs, is required. The role requires self-motivation, pro-active problem-solving, and the ability to multitask. Communication, report writing, and presentation skills are essential.
- Experience working as a Laser Safety Officer (LSO) or Radiation Safety Officer (RSO).
- Experience working in a hardware research or production environment.
- Proficiency with FDA/CDRH FLPPS, IEC 60825-1, and IEC 62471-1.
- A firm understanding of performing laser calculations (MPE, NOHD, NHZ) for various laser types and configurations.
- CLS O from the Board of Laser Safety (BLS).
- Ability to influence teams indirectly through timely and accurate analysis.
