Summary
Open continuous announcement. USDA Forest Service is seeking qualified pilots for positions when vacancies occur. Eligibility and qualifications will be verified when a vacancy for the location and grade is available.
Major Duties- Serve as pilot-in-command (PIC) of aircraft, performing point-to-point transportation of personnel and cargo.
- Conduct specialized missions such as fire suppression, fire retardant delivery, and rappel operations.
- Provide expert technical advice to regional and national aviation programs on policy, programs, and standard practices.
- Oversee planning and performance of specialized missions for high-risk activities including aerial ignition, mountain flying, and fire support missions.
- Plan, develop, and lead training programs for non-pilot aviation personnel.
- Act as technical authority on joint agency accident investigations.
- Evaluate contractor pilots for special use skills and complex operating environments.
- Assess safety, training practices, aircraft suitability, equipment use, and communication adequacy.
- Evaluate qualifications of employees overseeing aircraft operations.
No education requirement or substitution for this position.
EvaluationsThis is a Direct-Hire Authority position. All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are referred to the selecting official for appointment. Veteran preference does not apply.
What to Expect NextApplications are reviewed for eligibility and qualification. Qualified candidates will be notified of further evaluation or interview. Selected candidates will serve a 1-year probationary period during which performance and conduct will be assessed for the public interest. After successful probation the appointment will be continued.
