The City of Redmond Public Works Department builds, operates, protects and maintains the city’s essential infrastructure. Protecting and restoring the natural environment is embedded in the culture of the Department. The Environmental Compliance Supervisor provides leadership and direction for the staff who deliver programs in stormwater compliance, surface water and watershed management, solid waste, recycling, and utility planning.
This position ensures that the team meets regulatory requirements, advances sustainability goals, and delivers exceptional service to the community. The Supervisor fosters a culture of collaboration, accountability, and professional growth, guiding staff to achieve program objectives while developing their technical expertise and leadership skills.
The Environmental Compliance Supervisor is responsible for managing day-to-day operations and supervising a team of environmental professionals. This includes setting clear expectations, assigning work, and monitoring progress to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. The Supervisor provides coaching and mentorship to staff, supporting their professional development through training opportunities, performance feedback, and career growth planning.
In addition to staff supervision, the Supervisor leads strategic program implementation. For stormwater compliance, this includes overseeing permit documentation, source control inspection program, private drainage inspection program, illicit discharge, detection and elimination program, pollution prevention assistance program, and outreach campaigns that engage Redmond’s diverse community. For surface water and watershed management, the Supervisor directs monitoring programs, restoration planning, and reporting efforts that use best-available science to improve water quality and habitat conditions.
The Supervisor leads professional staff that lead the City’s solid waste and recycling programs, including contract oversight, education initiatives, and Zero Waste certification efforts. They coordinate with Communications to deliver clear, timely messages to residents and businesses, and they represent the City in regional forums to influence environmental policy. The position also oversees grant development and reporting, ensuring resources are leveraged to expand program impact.
A key responsibility of this role is building a high-performing team. The Supervisor creates an inclusive and supportive work environment, encourages innovation, and ensures staff have the tools and training needed to succeed. They lead regular team meetings, facilitate knowledge sharing, and promote cross-functional collaboration. By investing in staff development, the Supervisor strengthens the division’s capacity to deliver complex projects and adapt to evolving environmental challenges.
- Supervises professional staff assigned to watershed planning, NPDES permit implementation and reporting, pollution prevention inspection, utilities communications and solid waste contract management and implementation.
- Provides oversight to ensure responsiveness to spills, tracking and reporting in compliance with NPDES permit.
- Provides oversight to business inspection functions and reporting to outside agencies, such as the Washington State Department of Ecology.
- Collaborates with Utility Maintenance and Operations Center for spill response and reporting.
- Directs staff in development and implementation of strategic planning, such as Watershed Management Plan and the Stormwater and Surface Water System Plan.
- Prepares and leads the City Council approval process for contracts, agreements and programmatic updates related to Environmental Compliance Section activities.
