Job OverviewWe’re looking for a passionate and curious Senior Scientist I to lead media optimization projects, manage a small team, and drive technology development for cell culture media. The role requires strategic leadership, experimental design, and cross‑functional collaboration.
Responsibilities- Lead media optimization efforts that achieve titer, cell viability, and product quality targets throughout long‑duration upstream processes.
- Oversee the Redmond media development team (1‑2 director reports) and the laboratory.
- Drive technology development and continuous improvement strategic initiatives for cell culture media.
- Represent the Media function on early‑ and late‑stage cross‑functional development teams, influencing project strategy and providing data‑driven recommendations.
- Proactively identify cell‑culture‑associated risks, gaps, and opportunities for platform and molecule‑specific processes.
- Transfer novel media formulations to Manufacturing and support large‑scale GMP media preparation protocols and deviations.
- Design, execute, and analyze complex media screening DoE experiments to improve cell viability and product quality.
- Drive program and platform decisions based on experimental results and implement updates based on emerging data.
- Author novel media formulations and documentation, and transfer to Manufacturing.
- Degree in Biology, Engineering, Biochemistry, or related field with relevant industry experience: B.S. with 10+ years, M.S. with 8+ years, or Ph.D. with 3+ years of experience.
- Experience managing and coaching 1‑2 scientists.
- Advanced knowledge of cell biology, cell culture media development, and related analytical equipment.
- Preferable experience in perfusion technology, late‑stage process development, and process characterization.
- Statistical design and analysis experience using tools such as JMP, R, or Python.
- Experience with training machine learning models for optimizing high‑dimensional data sets preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to present complex ideas simply.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
- Availability to travel to Seattle for training or experimental support and willingness for minimal weekend work.
- Self‑starter who prioritizes impact, risk, and timelines and thrives in ambiguous, evolving environments.
- Organized collaborator capable of tracking multiple tasks and data.
- Ability to safely lift and handle materials up to 50 lbs.
- Base salary range: $126,000 to $137,000, variable based on skills and market.
