Software Design Engineer in Test (Contract)

Please note that this is a contract role providing services to Microsoft through external staffing partners of Allegis Global Solutions. If you are selected for this role, you will be employed by AGS and will not be an employee of Microsoft.

Summary

This position offers an exciting opportunity to work on critical Windows Storage and File Systems infrastructure, focusing on maintaining and enhancing testing frameworks that ensure the reliability of storage components used across billions of systems worldwide. The successful candidate will play a vital role in improving product quality signals by debugging legacy tests, reducing test noise, and modernizing testing platforms. This hands‑on technical role requires strong programming expertise and analytical problem‑solving skills to distinguish between product defects and test issues, ultimately contributing to the stability and performance of core operating system features that power devices globally.

Job Responsibilities
  • Execute comprehensive test plans, scenarios, scripts, and procedures for Windows Storage and File Systems components
  • Debug and fix legacy tests while converting older testing frameworks into modern platforms
  • Triage test runs to identify and differentiate between product bugs and test bugs
  • Document software defects using bug tracking systems and report findings to development teams
  • Monitor and track bug resolution efforts, following up on high‑impact product issues
  • Create and maintain databases of known test defects and testing documentation
  • Develop testing programs that address database impacts, software scenarios, and usability concerns
  • Analyze and interpret test results to provide actionable recommendations for improving testing processes
  • Plan test schedules and strategies aligned with project scope and delivery timelines
  • Reduce test noise ratio in quality dashboards to ensure accurate product quality signals
  • Address low‑hanging bugs independently while collaborating with developers on complex issues
Requirements
  • Minimum three years of hands‑on experience with C and C++ programming
  • Five to six years of overall experience in software testing or quality assurance
  • Proven track record of testing software applications and systems
  • Experience writing technical test documentation including test plans, scripts, and results reports
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret test results
  • Associate's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related technical field
  • Strong proficiency in C programming language
  • Advanced C++ programming capabilities
  • Power Shell scripting expertise
  • Debugging and troubleshooting complex software systems
  • Test automation and framework development
  • Defect tracking and issue resolution
  • Data structures and algorithms
  • Software testing methodologies and best practices
  • Analytical thinking and problem‑solving
  • Technical documentation writing

    Redmond, WA (Hybrid: 2‑3 days/week Onsite)

  • Pay Range*: $55 - $62 per hour
