The Recreation Leader works directly with other departmental staff members to provide assistance in the administration of programs and activities such as the After school Program, Alta Vista Community Center, Teen Programs, and Senior Programs.
This is a part-time/seasonal, non-exempt, hourly position designated as at-will and ineligible for City benefits. This post is continuous and may close at any time without notice.
The duties for this part-time position may include but not be limited to the following:
Participating in staff trainings and meetings, promoting the program, recruiting participants, keeping accurate records, ensuring participant safety, and planning, organizing, leading, and supervising daily activities. Activities include but are not limited to group games, sports, arts and crafts, special events and contests. Employees may be required to perform other related duties as assigned.
- After school Program: 2:30pm-6:00pm, Monday-Friday
- Alta Vista Facility: 7:30am-9:00pm, 4 to 6 hour shift per day
- Senior Centers: 9:00am-6:00pm, Monday-Friday, 4 to 6 hour shift per day
- Summer Camp Counselor:
Full day June
- August - Seaside Lagoon Cashier and Maintenance:
Seasonally, from May - September of each year - Opportunities to work other programs and events throughout the year
- Approximately 20 hours per week and up to 950 hours per year
Effective leadership skill(s); creativity; good decision making; ability to exercise appropriate judgment; ability to teach; ability to lead by example. Candidates must be at least 16 years old to apply.
Desired education and/or experiencePreferably some college credit in related field of study; experience working with children and/or seniors; experience leading recreation programs, and leadership skills.

- Have reliable transportation
- Possession of a valid California Driver License is recommended
- Temporary, part-time (PT), at-will position
- Hourly salary will be offered depending on qualifications
- Opportunity to promote to part-time Assistant Recreation Coordinator and/or part-time Program Coordinator, based on work experience and performance as Recreation Leader
The selection process may include but is not limited to:
Application review and evaluation, written examination, performance test and interview. The pre-employment process may include but not be limited to:
Reference checks, background investigation, fingerprint-based criminal history check, credit check, degree verification, and post-offer medical examination and drug test. For public safety positions, including positions based in the Police and/or Fire Department(s), the pre-employment process may also include but not be limited to a P.O.S.T. compliant background check, polygraph examination, post-offer medical examination and drug test, and post-offer psychological examination.
