Job Overview

Northrop Grumman’s Space Systems Sector is seeking a Principal/Sr. Principal Safety Systems Engineer – Level 3 or 4 to join our team in Redondo Beach, CA. The role is 100% onsite and requires a top‑secret clearance with access to DoD programs. The position can be filled at a Level 3 Principal Systems Engineer or a Level 4 Sr. Principal Systems Engineer.

It is contingent upon the candidate obtaining final clearances and program access within a reasonable period of time as determined by the company.

Relocation assistance may be available. Travel: 10% of the time.

Job Responsibilities
  • Review product designs, support equipment, facilities, functional specifications, and operations, and establish safety requirements for assigned systems.
  • Independently analyze and recommend safety criteria in system design, equipment, and procedures to control or eliminate hazards.
  • Develop safety documents to support customer and test/operational range requirements.
  • Interface with engineers to validate safety controls and gather verification evidence.
  • Support operational safety activities during manufacturing, integration, test, and launch.
  • Participate in accident investigations involving damage to products or related facilities and assist in identification of causes and corrective actions.
  • Evaluate the interrelationship of system safety requirements and other design and development aspects to ensure cost‑effective programs.
Basic Qualifications – Level 3
  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline with 5+ years of Engineering/Systems Safety experience, OR
  • Master’s degree in a STEM discipline with 3+ years of Engineering/Systems Safety experience, OR
  • PhD in a STEM discipline with 1+ year of Engineering/Systems Safety experience.
  • System Engineering background with System Safety experience.
  • Active DOD Top Secret clearance and a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) completed within the last 5 years; ability to obtain and maintain active SCI access.
Basic Qualifications – Level 4
  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline with 8+ years of Engineering/Systems Safety experience, OR
  • Master’s degree in a STEM discipline with 6+ years of Engineering/Systems Safety experience, OR
  • PhD in a STEM discipline with 4+ years of Engineering/Systems Safety experience.
  • System Engineering background with System Safety experience.
  • Active DOD Top Secret clearance and a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) completed within the last 5 years; ability to obtain and maintain active SCI access.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience performing PHA, SSHA, THA, and integrating updates into HTS and SAR.
  • Experience developing SSPP, HMMP, and EHA.
  • Experience developing MSPSP, GOP, and DRP.
  • Familiarity with MIL‑STD‑882E, SSCMAN 91‑710, AFI 91‑202.
  • Familiarity with Fed/Cal OSHA Standards.
  • Experience on space or laser programs.
  • Experience leading a System Safety team.
  • Experience with DoD safety programs.
  • Experience performing System Safety across all program phases.
  • Experience providing safety oversight during integration, test, assembly, and hardware movement.
  • Extensive technical expertise in System Safety and related disciplines.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to develop technical solutions to complex problems using ingenuity.
  • Independent work capability.
  • Leadership of major program completion.
  • Active DOD Top Secret clearance with SCI access at time of application and prior to start date.
