Petal Surgical, Inc. Electrical Engineer — Redwood City, CA — Full Time

Responsible and accountable for development and sustainment of the electrical and generator subsystems related to incisionless surgery technologies.

About Petal Surgical, Inc.

For centuries now, surgery has been about invasive and painful manipulation of tissue with one or more tools. Even the most recent advances in the field have not been able to break this fundamental constraint. We are changing that. At Petal, we are on a mission to make incisionless surgery the standard of interventional care, for everyone, everywhere.

Responsibilities

This role is responsible and accountable for the development and sustainment of the electrical and generator subsystems for our incisionless surgery platform.

General

  • Uphold the organization's vision, mission and culture.
  • Inspire the relentless and rapid pursuit of audacious goals to enable revolutionary innovations in the domain of incisionless surgery.
  • Enable the Company’s success in meeting its electrical engineering & generator subsystem goals and objectives.

Product Development

  • Contribute to the design and development of electronics for the treatment system (high-intensity focused ultrasound transducer, high-voltage signal generation, power distribution, harnessing, sensing, robotic actuation, etc.) from concept through safe human use, with clear design inputs, outputs, and traceability under FDA 21 CFR 820.30 and ISO 13485.
  • Design and debug subcircuits within the electronics stack, including power stages, matching networks, signal conditioning, and control interfaces, under the guidance of senior/staff electrical engineers.
  • Own schematic capture, PCB layout, build, and bring up for assigned boards.
  • Perform circuit simulations (e.g., SPICE) and basic modeling to validate design choices before prototyping, and iterate based on lab results.
  • Bring up new hardware, execute structured test plans, and capture measurements using oscilloscopes, VNAs, and other lab equipment.
  • Coordinate with firmware/software, mechanical, and systems engineering teams to resolve cross-functional issues and ensure robust integration into the full device.
  • Contribute to and maintain design control documentation (requirements, design descriptions, risk files, test protocols/reports, DHF content) for the electrical subsystem.
  • Maintain and document existing generator subsystem assemblies, monitor their health and performance, and support root cause analysis and documentation of failure modes.
Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • At least 5 years of relevant electrical design and development experience in a regulated environment.
  • Ability to work independently in an environment with unsolved science and technology challenges, evolving requirements, and a dynamic team committed to changing the fundamentals of surgery.
  • Experience developing products in close collaboration with software, mechanical, electrical, and systems engineers.
  • Strong experience with schematic capture and PCB design tools, power electronics and distribution, analog and digital circuit design, and integration with embedded systems.
  • Relevant technical expertise in areas such as class D/E amplifiers, RF basics, impedance matching, mixed-signal design, and microcontroller-based systems.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience in the medical device industry.
  • Experience designing for and achieving electrical safety compliance (e.g., IEC 60601‑1).
  • Experience with risk analysis and implementing patient risk mitigations at the hardware and firmware levels.
  • Experience transferring electrical R&D designs into manufacturing and pilot builds.
  • Experience with active therapeutic or diagnostic capital equipment (e.g., robotic, imaging, energy-delivery, or ablation devices).
  • Experience with resonant power converter topologies and design.
  • Experience with FPGA design tools (e.g., Quartus Prime).
  • Experience with Altium Designer for schematic capture and PCB layout.

Level: Entry to Senior (Depending on experience and match).
