Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Labor & Delivery night shift position requiring CA licensure, Advanced Fetal Monitoring certification, and a minimum of 2 years of L&D experience.

Responsibilities
  • Acute care hospital Labor & Delivery unit (LDRP setting with newer rooms)
  • Patient population includes 32 weeks gestation and above; rarely sees GYN clean patient overflow
  • Level 2 NICU on site staffed by Stanford nurses, who attend each deliveries
  • Patient ratios per ACOG and California standards: 1:3 or 1:4 couplets
  • EMR:
    Cerner Power Chart Maternity and Cerner Fetal Links for fetal heart monitoring
  • 12-hour night shifts, 7p–7a
  • Required to work every other weekend (Fri/Sat nights and Sat/Sun days)
  • Floating to Postpartum (PP) in rotation with permanent staff; travelers are first to float
  • Call is not required but optional — during low census, on-call may be assigned in 4-hour increments; must be within 20 minutes of the facility when on call (a sleep room is available on-site)
  • Anesthesia available 24/7 (typically in-house; up to 20 minutes away); approximately 90% of patients elect for epidural
  • RT available 24/7; pharmacy available until 10:30 PM with satellite coverage after hours
  • OB techs serve as aides when not in active cases; charge nurse handles patient triage
  • High volume of Mandarin-speaking patients; translation services available via Vocera phones
  • Higher socioeconomic patient population with a median maternal age of 37
  • Unit orientation consists of 3 shifts: 2 on L&D and 1 on Mother/Baby (MB)
  • All staff, including travelers, participate in triage and non-stress testing (NST)
  • Lactation nurses are on staff during the day and document the lactation care plan
  • Not a locked unit, but uses the Hugs and Kisses infant security system
  • Holiday coverage required on a rotating basis (approximately one of every three major holidays)
  • Ceil blue scrubs are provided by the hospital
  • Candidates must pass a Relias Dysrhythmia exam before an offer can be confirmed; contact your recruiter to have the exam arranged
  • A sterile technique skills test (Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes) is administered on the first day of orientation
Requirements
  • Active CA RN license (must be active and in hand; pending licenses not accepted)
  • Minimum 2 years of L&D nursing experience required
  • Required certifications (active, not pending): BLS, ACLS, NRP, and Advanced Fetal Monitoring
  • Cerner EMR experience strongly applicable given system in use
  • Must provide a copy of a valid driver's license
  • Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, both including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
  • Candidates must not have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any Common Spirit, CHI, or Dignity Health facility within the past year (candidates placed PRN through outside staffing firms will be considered)
