Tau Motors is a venture‑backed advanced technology company located in Redwood City, CA, that designs next‑generation products for electrification.

About the Role

We are looking for a highly skilled Senior Embedded Software Engineer to drive the development of Tau's cutting‑edge software‑enabled platforms through architecture, requirements, design, code, and testing. You will collaborate closely with cross‑functional teams to define, develop, integrate, and test software functions, ensuring safe, robust, and efficient operation.

What You’ll Do
  • Develop high‑quality embedded code for real‑time platforms, including motor controls and software‑defined power electronics.
  • Apply coding standards (MISRA) and functional safety (ISO 26262) throughout the software development process.
  • Implement continuous integration and delivery practices within the software team and across the organization.
  • Work with multidisciplinary teams to develop and integrate complex hardware/software systems.
  • Collaborate with control engineers and domain experts to implement advanced algorithms and data structures in a testable, scalable, modular fashion.
  • Deliver software architecture, create design requirements, and implement specifications while working with multiple stakeholders to develop robust and efficient power converters and systems.
  • Develop software tests for various environments, including unit tests, software‑in‑the‑loop (SIL), and hardware‑in‑the‑loop (HIL).
  • Participate in code reviews and provide technical feedback to drive high‑quality designs.
What You’ll Bring
  • Expert‑level knowledge of embedded firmware development in C or C++.
  • Familiarity with TI and Infineon MCUs.
  • Experience using debuggers, oscilloscopes, JTAG, logic analyzers, digital buses (SPI, I2C, CAN, LIN, Ethernet) and related communication protocols (UDS, XCP, DOIP, TCP/IP).
  • Best practices and disciplines for software engineering, as well as hands‑on experience developing and troubleshooting embedded hardware and complex systems.
  • Proven record in software product development for embedded systems with diverse and ambiguous requirements.
  • Ability to identify and resolve conflicting requirements.
  • Experience with design and implementation for power conversion, motion control, and hardware driver applications for power electronics.
  • Validation mindset to see firmware throughout the lifecycle, particularly with architecture validation and maintenance.
  • Strong communication skills, teamwork preference, and passion for delivering high‑quality outcomes.
Preferred Skills
  • Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with C/C++ and proficiency with Python.
  • Experience developing embedded software in a regulated environment, complying with safety standards such as ISO 26262.
  • Experience with lab instruments such as oscilloscopes, bus analyzers, and debuggers.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Experience with version control, configuration management, and software change control tools (Git, Jira).
Desired Skills
  • Familiarity with requirements‑based testing and test automation with hardware‑in‑the‑loop (HIL) environments.
  • Experience with both real‑time operating systems (RTOS) and bare‑metal embedded software development.
  • Experience with high‑voltage and/or motor control systems.
