Head of Finance

Bass MCS is looking for a Head of Financ to build and own our finance and accounting function from the ground up. This is a hands‑on, individual‑contributor role. You won’t be managing a team on day one, you’ll be doing the work yourself while establishing the systems, processes, and controls that let us scale.

You’ll own the full spectrum of accounting and finance operations (AP, AR, payroll, budgeting, and forecasting) while also navigating the compliance complexity of a distributed workforce across California, Nevada, and Texas. This is an opportunity to design a finance function from scratch, not inherit and maintain someone else’s.

• Accounting Operations
  :
  Own accounts payable and accounts receivable end-to-end, including vendor and customer relationships, invoicing, and collections
• Payroll
  :
  Manage multi-state payroll processing and ensure accurate, compliant, on-time pay across all three sta
  tes
• Budgeting & Forecasting
  :
  Build and maintain the company’s budgeting process and financial forecasts; provide the CEO with clear, timely visibility into cash position and financial performance
• Multi-State Compliance
  :
  Navigate the tax, withholding, and employment law obligations that come with employees working across CA, NV, and TX, including nonresident withholding, SUI registration, and nexus considerations
• Systems & Infrastructure
  :
  Select and implement the accounting, payroll, and benefits platforms that will support the company as it grows (evaluating options like Gusto, Rippling, Justworks, and similar)
• Financial Reporting
  :
  Prepare monthly close, financial statements, and executive-ready reporting for leadership
• Process Design
  :
  Establish scalable financial controls, close processes, and documentation as the company’s first dedicated finance hire.

• 8+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience
• Hands‑on experience across the full accounting cycle, not just oversight, but doing the work
• Strong working knowledge of payroll and employment tax fundamentals
• Comfort operating without an existing finance infrastructure or team to lean on
• Excellent communication skills; ability to translate financial detail into clear, executive-ready summa
  ries

• Experience building a finance function from scratch at a startup or small company (this is one of the most important signals we’re looking for)
• Multi-state payroll, tax, and compliance experience
