summary description
under general supervision, assists in the supervision of disabled and non-ambulatory children while they are being transported to and from school. Performs related work as required. Pupil transportation assistants are scheduled to work at least 27.5 hours/week and work 30 hours/week on average.
essential duties and responsibilities
- assists in the supervision of physically handicapped, non-ambulatory and students with severe behavioral issues during the bus ride and any necessary transfers.
- maintains safety.
- assists in securing wheelchairs and safety restraints.
- assists with operating the wheelchair lift.
- monitors students for seizures or breathing difficulties.
- assists bus driver with all in medical emergencies.
- keeps track of student possessions.
- maintains discipline.
- assists in evacuation of students during emergency or practice drills.
qualifications
any combination of education and experience that could provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain knowledge and skills would be:
education: equivalent to a high school diploma.
experience: any experience that would demonstrate the ability to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities.
licenses/certificates: possession of, or ability to obtain, a crisis prevention intervention (cpi) certification. Cpr certification required.

- disabled and non-ambulatory student's requirements.
- special needs student habits and characteristics.
- basic discipline and behavior modification techniques.
- basic first aid/cpr
- cpi (crisis prevention intervention)
- learning to recognize and deal effectively with physically challenged and non-ambulatory students' various medical emergencies.
- learning assertive discipline techniques.
- learning to evacuate disabled and non-ambulatory students from a bus in an emergency situation.
- learning to secure wheelchairs and safety restraints.
- lifting and/or carrying large, heavy (up to and including 100 pounds) people or objects in awkward positions.
- kneeling, bending, and/or stooping down to assist students.
- reading, writing, and speaking english at a level required for successful job performance.
- working effectively in a stressful situation.
- understanding and carrying out oral and written instructions.
- establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
