Job Description

Insight Magazine is a student-run feature magazine, where stories are written by students for students at the University of Nevada, Reno to be informative, conversational, and relatable. We aspire to be honest and thought-provoking by publishing textual and visual work. Those who contribute to the magazine have a rare opportunity to share their thoughts via physical print with the student body and across the Northern Nevada community.

Our team explores the craft of journalism through writing, photography, graphic-design, public relations, and more. Insight allows students to become familiar with the world of publication by creating a magazine and providing them with real work experience to propel them in their respective fields.

The Staff Writer’s main responsibility is to produce written content for Insight’s print magazine and website. They are responsible for writing 2-3 articles per volume and online-specific content when necessary. Articles will range from 400 to 1,000 words, depending on the crafted story. This position requires a strict adherence to deadlines set by the Editor-in-Chief and Copy Editor. The Staff Writer will also help ensure that volunteer writers adhere to the selected theme.

The Staff Writer will directly work with the Copy Editor to improve their written work and should therefore be willing to make any necessary changes throughout the revising/editing
processes.

All staff members are expected to attend weekly team meetings to discuss updates, announcements, etc. to uphold solid and effective communication amongst the Insight Magazine team.

Note: This job application asks that 2 written work samples be combined into one document and submitted.

Responsibilities

  • Create textual content for Insight’s print magazine and website

  • Revise written articles based on feedback from the Copy Editor and/or EIC

  • Mitigate spelling and grammatical errors found in drafts with the help of the Copy Editor

  • Adhere to strict deadlines

  • Attend weekly staff meetings

  • Distribute Insight Magazines

Required Qualifications

  • Understanding of Google Documents and Google Drive

  • Knowledge of AP Citation Style

  • Diverse writing/reading experience

  • Creativity towards written pieces

  • Organized, communicative, and collaborative

  • Ability to work nights and weekends

  • Commitment to the ethical and moral leadership development of students
