Position: Special Education Para educator Assistant 2 Autism (32.5 hrs/wk, 182 days)

Summary Description

Under general supervision, assists teaching staff in providing individual and group instruction, developing and maintaining records and instructional materials, and performing related work as required.

Para educator Assistant II – Special Education

The role requires academic instructional assistance for a significant portion of the assignment in a Special Education classroom. At a Title I school, a high level of qualification is required.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Requires additional intensive training beyond that of a Para educator Aide II, including data collection, communication strategies, severe behavior management, and positive behavior management for Autism Spectrum Disorders. Independently prepares materials, implements behaviorally based instruction, develops lesson outlines, conducts screenings, provides vocational training, prepares behavioral analysis data, participates in student IEPs, and transforms the general education curriculum.

Exemplary Duties / Responsibilities
  • Assist teaching staff with classroom and related tasks.
  • Prepare lesson outlines, lesson plans, and teaching aids.
  • Present or reinforce learning concepts using various teaching methods.
  • Assist students individually or in groups with assignments.
  • Prepare, administer, and grade examinations and homework.
  • Observe progress and identify problem areas for referral.
  • Conference with teachers, parents, and others on student progress.
  • Prepare classrooms and audio‑visual equipment.
  • Order supplies, maintain bulletin boards, and manage teaching materials.
  • Assist with student discipline in classrooms, playgrounds, and school halls.
  • Operate standard office equipment.
When Assigned to SPED Programs

EC – Early Childhood

Provides services to 3‑5‑year‑olds with disabilities, covering literacy, math readiness, motor skills, self‑help, communication, and social skills.

EC SIP – Early Childhood/SIP

Focuses on social‑emotional development and serves students with behavioral challenges in a small group setting. Combines EC and SIP practices to best meet student needs.

EC STRAT – Early Childhood/Strategies

Serves students with deficits in communication and social‑emotional skills, often due to autism, within a small group setting and emphasizes extensive data collection.

IK – Integrated Kindergarten

Co‑teaching model that integrates kindergarten standards and curriculum with developmentally appropriate instruction.

CLS – Comprehensive Life Skills

Builds a foundation for life success through an academically rich environment, supporting critical social, emotional, and cognitive skills.

SIP – Social Intervention Program

Provides academic and emotional/behavioral support for students with significant behavioral needs within the regular school setting, aiming to develop prosocial behaviors and academic progress.

Strategies

Intensive instruction for students on the autism spectrum, covering language, routines, skills, and social behaviors in a small group setting with high adult‑student ratio.

DHH – Deaf and Hard of Hearing

Supports students with hearing impairments to access curriculum and utilizes appropriate technology and modalities.

VI – Vision Impairment

Assists students with visual impairments, including adaptation of learning materials and technology, to ensure access to curriculum.

Employment Standards Education
  • Completion of 48 semester or 60 quarter units at an accredited college or university, ideally in child development, education, special education, or a related field.
Experience
  • One (1) year of experience demonstrating the ability to perform duties of the class, such as instructional activities or personal guidance within an organized program.
Alternative Pathways
  • A high school diploma with two (2) years of experience as a Para educator aide or two (2) years of experience demonstrating required duties.
Teacher Assistant II – Special Education, Desirable Qualifications
  • Thirty (30) hours of classroom work: 12 class hours in orientation, ABA Principles I, Data Collection I; 8 class hours CPI training; 8 class hours ABA Principles II and Data Collection II; 2 hours in‑class observation by a PC or BCBA, or Assistant BA.
