TEACHER ASSISTANT III - Special Education
High‑Qualified Status (HQ)Applicants must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, and at least 48 semester hours at an accredited college or university, or an associate’s degree or higher, or a Para Pro Assessment score of at least 460.
Summary DescriptionUnder general supervision, assists teaching staff in providing individual and group instruction, developing and maintaining instructional records and materials, and performing related work as required.
Distinguishing CharacteristicsThe Teacher Assistant III regularly performs academic instructional assistance in a Special Education classroom. In Title I schools, the assistant must be highly qualified. Additional intensive training beyond that required for a Teacher Aide III includes student data collection, communication strategies, severe behavior management, and positive behavior management for Autism Spectrum Disorders. The role independently prepares materials, implements behavior‑based instruction, develops lesson outlines, conducts screenings, provides vocational training in the community, prepares behavioral data, participates in IEP teams, and modifies the general education curriculum.
ExemplaryDuties / Responsibilities
- Assist teaching staff in classroom and related areas.
- Assist in preparing lesson outlines and plans.
- Assist in planning, preparing, and developing teaching aids.
- Present subject matter utilizing varied teaching methods and techniques.
- Assist students individually or in groups with lesson assignments.
- Prepare, administer, and grade examinations and homework.
- Observe student progress and problem areas for referral to the teacher.
- Confere with teacher and parent on student progress.
- Prepare classrooms and audiovisual equipment.
- Order supplies and maintain classroom bulletin boards.
- Assist in maintaining student discipline and order in school areas.
- Operate standard office equipment.

Provides services to three, four, and five‑year‑olds with disabilities, addressing literacy, math readiness, motor skills, self‑help, communication, and social skills. - Early Childhood SIP Program

Focuses on social‑emotional development for students with behavioral challenges in a small group setting. - Early Childhood Strat Program

Emphasizes communication and social‑emotional skills for students with deficits caused by Autism. - Integrated Kindergarten

Co‑teaching model covering kindergarten standards and curriculum. - Comprehensive Life Skills Program

Builds foundation for life success and includes critical social, emotional, and cognitive skills. - Social Intervention Program
:
Supports academic and emotional/behavioral needs for students with significant behavioral challenges. - Hearing Impaired Program
:
Provides access to curriculum for Deaf/Hard of Hearing students and uses appropriate technology.
- Education:
48 semester (or 60 quarter) units from an accredited institution, preferably in child development, education, or related field. - Experience:
One year of experience in student instructional activities or personal guidance within an organized program. - Alternative:
High‑school diploma plus two years as a teacher aide or equivalent experience.
- Thirty hours of classroom work and observation focusing on ABA principles, data collection, and supervised observation.
- Knowledge of educational principles, student needs, behavior modification, English usage, basic mathematics, office methods, and office equipment.
- Skill at instructing students, preparing lesson plans, maintaining records, developing materials, typing, and speaking English.
- CPR certification required.
