PARA EDUCATOR ASSISTANT II – Special Education
Under general supervision, assists teaching staff in providing individual and group instruction, including developing and maintaining records and instructional materials. Incumbent performs related work as required.
Distinguishing CharacteristicsThe Para educator Assistant II is regularly required to provide academic instructional assistance for a significant portion of the assignment in a Special Education classroom. In a Title I school, the candidate must be highly qualified. The role requires additional intensive training beyond that of a Para educator Aide II, covering student data collection, communication strategies, severe behaviors, and positive behavior management for Autism Spectrum Disorders.
The Assistant independently prepares materials, implements behavior‑based instruction, develops lesson outlines, conducts screenings, provides vocational training, prepares behavioral analysis data, participates in student IEPs, and extensively modifies the general education curriculum.
Assists teaching staff in classroom and related areas; prepares lesson outlines and plans; develops teaching aids; presents subject matter to students using diverse methods; assists students individually or in groups; administers and grades examinations and homework; observes student progress and identifies problem areas; confers with classroom teachers and parents; prepares classrooms and AV equipment; orders supplies; maintains classroom bulletin boards; distributes and collects materials;
assists in maintaining discipline on playgrounds, lunchroom, halls, library, and study halls; operates standard office equipment.
- Education:
48 semester or 60 quarter units from an accredited college or university in child development, education, special education, or related field. - Experience:
One year of experience performing duties of the class (instructional activities or personal guidance of students). - Alternatively:
High school diploma plus two years of experience as a Para educator aide or similar. - Desirable qualifications include 30 hours of classroom work and observation in ABA Principles and CPI training; knowledge of education principles, discipline, behavior modification, English usage, basic mathematics, office methods, and technology.
- Skills:
instructing students in academic and self‑care skills; preparing lesson plans and teaching aids; maintaining student confidence; dealing with parents and school personnel; evaluating situations and taking effective action; typing and spelling proficiency; maintaining accurate records; developing instructional materials; operating office and AV equipment.
