A Tennessee public high school assistant football coach is responsible for supporting the head coach in the overall leadership, athletic instruction, safety, and administrative execution of the school's football program. This role requires a strict commitment to the rules of the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA).
Core Job Responsibilities- Instruction & Player Development
:
Assist the head coach in teaching football fundamentals, position‑specific skills, team strategies, and athletic conditioning. - Student Supervision
:
Maintain absolute supervision of student‑athletes during practices, games, workouts, and travel. This explicitly includes mandatory locker room supervision until all players have vacated the area. - Safety & Welfare
:
Promote a safe environment, recognize potential injuries, ensure required medical authorization forms are accessible, and document all injuries immediately. - Rules Compliance
:
Ensure all players and practices strictly adhere to TSSAA rules, local school board policies, and building‑level athletic guidelines. - Character Mentorship
:
Conduct oneself in a manner that models excellent sportsmanship, discipline, fitness, and respect within the community. - Logistics & Equipment
:
Support the head coach with field preparation, uniform/equipment management, and team travel logistics (such as riding the team bus).
Public schools in Tennessee accept both faculty and non‑faculty applicants under specific TSSAA Coaching Classifications
- TSSAA Classifications
:- Faculty Coach: A full‑time certified educator with a valid Tennessee teaching license.
- Retired Educator: A retired teacher with 5+ years of experience holding a valid TN license.
- Non‑Faculty Coach: A classified employee or community member approved by the principal, superintendent, and local school board.
- Education
:
High school diploma or equivalent is minimum; a Bachelor's degree is frequently preferred. - Mandatory Training
:- Current First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications.
- NFHS/TSSAA approved Concussion in Sports training.
- Sudden Cardiac Arrest training course.
- Background Check
:
Must clear a comprehensive TBI/FBI criminal background check and fingerprinting process.

Seasonal, extra‑duty supplement or classified contract. - Calendar
:
Ranges from July (pre‑season conditioning) through November or December (playoffs). Includes mandatory after‑school practices and Friday night games.
