Highly Qualified Status (HQ)
Applicants must possess a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent, and have completed one of the following:
Completed at least 48 semester hours of credit at an accredited college or university;
Obtained an associate’s degree or higher degree from an accredited college or university; or Passed the Para Pro Assessment prepared and administered by Educational Testing Services (ETS) with a score of at least 460.
Under general supervision, assists teaching staff in providing individual and group instruction, developing and maintaining records and instructional materials, and performing related work as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics- The Para educator Assistant I & II class is regularly required to perform academic instructional assistance for a significant portion of the assignment.
- The Para educator Assistant II class requires additional intensive training beyond the Para educator Aide class in student data collection, communication strategies, severe behaviors, and positive behavior management for Autism Spectrum Disorders.
- The Para educator Assistant I & II class is distinct from the Severely Mentally and Physically Challenged class, which focuses on functional skills, life skills, and attendant services rather than academic instruction.
- Assists teaching staff in classroom and related areas.
- Prepares lesson outlines and plans, teaching aids, and presentations.
- Utilizes a variety of teaching methods and techniques in traditional and non‑traditional settings.
- Assists students individually or in groups with lesson assignments and reinforces learning concepts.
- Prepares, administers, and grades examinations and homework assignments.
- Observes progress and problem areas of students for referral to the classroom teacher.
- Confers with classroom teacher and parent on progress of students.
- Prepares classroom and audio‑visual equipment for use, orders supplies, maintains bulletin boards, and distributes collections of teaching materials.
- Assists in maintaining student discipline and order in playgrounds, lunchroom, school halls, library, and study halls.
- Operates standard office equipment.
- Education:
Completion of 48 semester or 60 quarter units from an accredited college or university in child development, education, special education, or a related field. - Experience:
One year of experience demonstrating the ability to perform duties such as student instructional activities or personal guidance in an organized program. - Alternatively:
High school diploma combined with two years of experience as a Para educator aide or two years of experience demonstrating the duties described.
Applicants applying for Special Education Para educator Assistant I positions must have:
- Thirty (30) hours of classroom work and observation: 12 class hours, 8 CPI training hours, 8 ABA Principles II and Data Collection II hours, and 2 hours of in‑class observation by a PC or BCBA.
- Meeting the highly qualified requirements and other WCSD requirements for the assistant position.
- Knowledge of educational principles, student needs, behavior modification techniques, correct English usage, basic mathematics, office methods, and equipment.
- Skill at instructing students in academic and self‑care skills, preparing realistic lesson plans, securing student confidence, dealing with parents and staff, evaluating situations, typing accurately, and maintaining records.
- Ability to develop instructional materials, make mathematical computations, and operate office and audio‑visual equipment.
Incumbents may be required to follow any other instructions and perform related duties as directed by their supervisor.
