Position: Library Assistant II/ Library Associate II HQ (35 hrs/wk, 186 days)

LIBRARY ASSISTANT 2

Under general direction of the school site principal, the Library Assistant 2 is responsible for the operation and maintenance of an elementary school library. Incumbent performs related work as required in the school library.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Student Programs & Engagement
  • Provides weekly enrichment programs for students, including story time, book talks, puppetry, and computer/media presentations.
  • Designs programming that attracts students to the library and encourages reading and lifelong learning.
  • Maintains effective class management during scheduled library visits.
  • Participates in school literacy initiatives such as Nevada Reading Week activities.
Library Environment & Access
  • Creates and maintains an environment where students and staff can fully utilize library resources.
  • Trains students and staff on how to effectively use library resources, including library operating software, Nevada state databases, and the Internet.
Collection Management
  • Maintains knowledge and use of the library operating software, entering new materials, deleting outdated or lost items, and updating patron records.
  • Coordinates the selection of materials for purchase, including books, periodicals, audio‑visual resources, and equipment.
Budget & Purchasing
  • Handles the library budget and maintains accurate accounting of all funds collected and expended.
  • Works with vendors and the school site secretary regarding orders, invoices, and shipments.
Collaboration & Instructional Support
  • Collaborates with teachers to provide materials and resources that support classroom instruction and activities.
Professional Responsibilities & Compliance
  • Attends Library Services professional development and department meetings.
  • Attends school‑site meetings as required.
  • Adheres to current WCSD library collection policies and explains library procedures and regulations when needed.
  • Conducts annual library inventory and prepares required reports.
Supervision & Additional Duties
  • May train and supervise student and parent volunteers.
  • Assists with regularly scheduled school‑site duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Education:

    Equivalent to a high school diploma. Coursework in library science is desirable.
  • Experience:

    One (1) year of entry‑level library experience or two (2) years of responsible clerical experience.
  • Licenses/Certificates:
    None required.
  • Highly Qualified:
    Individuals selected into a Title 1 school must be Highly Qualified. Applicants must possess a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent and have completed the following requirements: completed at least 48 semester hours of credit at an accredited college or university; or obtained an associate’s degree or higher degree from an accredited college or university; or passed the Para Pro Assessment with a score of at least 460.

  • Reading, writing, and general business math.
  • Routine clerical, library cataloging, reference works, and classification procedures.
  • Library material selection based on reader interest level according to age and ability of students.
  • Computer operations, typing, processing purchase orders, bookkeeping, inventory procedures, and organization of files.
  • Working with students and effectively in an environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Communicating effectively in verbal and written form.
  • Following verbal and written instructions.
  • Utilizing and explaining library materials and technology, including online card catalogs and Internet resources.
  • Maintaining detailed records and reports.
  • Classifying library materials.
  • Working effectively with faculty, staff, students, and parents to create a positive atmosphere for all library users.
  • Encouraging and engaging students in reading, viewing, and listening for understanding and enjoyment.
  • Operating and maintaining a computerized library automation system.
  • Organizing, classifying, and shelving library materials.
  • Assisting students and staff in locating and using print and digital resources.
  • Instructing students and staff in the use of library technology.
