Position: Special Education Para educator Aide 3 1:1 HQ CLS (32.5 hrs./wk., 180 days)

High Qualification Status (HQ)

To be considered for this position you must be Highly Qualified. Applicants must have:

  • A high school diploma or recognized equivalent.
  • Completed at least 48 semester hours of credit at an accredited college or university, or obtained an associate’s degree or higher from an accredited institution.
  • Passed the Para Pro Assessment prepared and administered by Educational Testing Services (ETS) with a score of at least 460.
Summary Description

Under supervision, assists teaching staff in a special education classroom. Provides individual or group support to students based on functional living, academic, or behavioral needs. May also provide attendant services to students with intellectual or physical disabilities and performs related work as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics

The aide works in a special education classroom, assisting teachers and/or students in various settings such as Comprehensive Life Skills, Early Childhood, Multi-Age, Social Intervention Programs, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Social Resource and Resource classrooms, or one‑on‑one assistance. At Title I schools, the aide must be highly qualified. The aide may act as a liaison between general and resource teachers, preview instructional information, and attend seminars and conferences as needed.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Support students with intellectual, physical, or behavioral disabilities during bus boarding and de‑boarding, and escort them to proper locations within school.
  • Accompany students into general education classrooms and provide attendant services such as diapering, toileting, facial hygiene, and basic health and hygiene instruction.
  • Perform delegated procedures including clean intermittent catheterization, emergency and first aid care, and assist with medication administration when trained.
  • Move students weighing 50–80 pounds daily and repetitively while following safety procedures.
  • Prepare and assist with feeding as needed and support instruction in functional life skills.
  • Modify general education classroom assignments as needed and follow individual behavior plans outlined in IEPs.
  • Use positive behavior management techniques and assist with lesson assignments.
  • Maintain discipline and order in playground, lunchroom, library, and classroom settings.
  • Accompany students on field trips and adjust equipment such as wheelchairs or oxygen hoses.
  • Communicate observations and concerns to special education teachers and assist with bulletin board maintenance.
  • Assist in operating classroom equipment or assistive technology devices, record progress toward goals, and develop instructional materials and graphs.
  • Modify general education curriculum when appropriate, participate in district training, and implement non‑violent behavioral intervention procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student information and records.
Employment Standards
  • Education/

    Experience:

    Any relevant education or experience that provides required knowledge and skills; demonstrating ability to perform duties.
  • Knowledge: Educational principles and techniques; student behavior; basic discipline and positive behavior modification;
    English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation; basic mathematics; office methods and procedures; communication and behavioral strategies; deaf communication modalities; and computer skills.
  • Skills: Confidence and cooperation with students; effective communication with students, parents, and school personnel; accurate evaluation and action; basic typing and computer proficiency; record‑keeping and instructional material organization; mathematical computations; operating office and audiovisual equipment; lifting techniques; and moving students weighing 50–80 pounds.
  • Licenses/Certificates: Possession of CPI Certification and a minimum age of 18 years.
