PARA EDUCATOR ASSISTANT II – Special EducationWhen working in a Special Education classroom, the Para educator Assistant II assists teaching staff in a variety of instructional, behavioral, and administrative tasks. The role is highly qualified and includes specialized training in data collection, communication strategies, severe behavior management, and positive behavior support for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Responsibilities also encompass preparing materials, implementing behaviorally based instruction, conducting screenings, providing vocational training, and actively participating in IEPs.
DISTINGUISHINGCHARACTERISTICS
• Required to perform academic instructional assistance for a significant portion of the assignment.
• In a Title I school, must be highly qualified.
• Required to undertake intensive training beyond that for a Para educator Aide II, covering student data collection, communication strategies, severe behaviors, and positive behavior management for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
• Independently prepares materials, implements behaviorally based instructions, develops lesson outlines and computer‑generated instructional materials, conducts screenings, provides daily vocational training, prepares graphs, charts, and behavioral analysis data, participates in IEPs, possesses in‑depth knowledge in communication, and extensively modifies and adapts the general education curriculum.
- Assist teaching staff with classroom instruction and related areas.
- Assist in preparing lesson outlines and plans.
- Assist in developing teaching aids.
- Present subject matter to students using a variety of teaching methods and techniques.
- Assist students individually or in groups with lesson assignments.
- Prepare, administer, and grade examinations and homework.
- Observe student progress and identify problem areas for referral.
- Collaborate with classroom teacher and parents on student progress.
- Prepare classrooms and audio‑visual equipment for use.
- Order supplies and maintain classroom bulletin boards.
- Distribute and collect teaching materials.
- Assist in maintaining student discipline on playgrounds, lunchroom, school halls, library, and study halls.
- Operate standard office equipment.
Provides services to children aged 3–5 with disabilities, using developmentally appropriate curriculum that addresses literacy, math readiness, motor skills, self‑help, communication, and social skills.
Early Childhood SIP (EC SIP)Focuses primarily on social‑emotional development for students with behavioral challenges in a small group setting.
Early Childhood STRAT (EC STRAT)Targets communication and social‑emotional skill development for students with Autism, using varied strategies in a small group setting.
Integrated Kindergarten (IK)Co‑teaching model that addresses all areas of child development and kindergarten standards.
Comprehensive Life Skills (CLS)Builds foundations for life success while maintaining an academically rich environment to support students with cognitive disabilities.
Social Intervention Program (SIP)Provides academic and emotional/behavioral support for students with significant needs within the regular school setting.
Strategies & Social ResourceProvides systematic instruction for receptive/expressive language, functional routines, pre‑academic skills, social skills, and behavior management for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
DHH – Deaf and Hard of HearingProvides knowledge and support for students with hearing impairments, using appropriate questioning, discussion techniques, and technology to access curriculum.
Vision ImpairmentSupports students who are blind, partially sighted, or have multiple impairments, providing adaptations, assistive technology, and environmental awareness.
