PARA EDUCATOR AIDE III Qualifications
Highly Qualified Status (HQ):
Applicants must possess a high school diploma or its equivalent and meet one of the following:
- Completed at least 48 semester hours of credit at an accredited college or university;
- Obtained an associate’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university;
- Passed the Para Pro Assessment administered by Educational Testing Services (ETS) with a score of at least 460.
Under supervision, works in a special education classroom assisting teaching staff in a variety of instructional activities. Assists teachers and provides individual or group assistance based on students’ functional living, academic, and behavioral support needs. Incumbent may also provide attendant services to students with intellectual and/or physical disabilities.
Responsibilities- Assist students with intellectual, physical, or behavioral disabilities and provide attendant services (diapering, toileting, washing faces, etc.) before and after school.
- Support instruction in health and hygiene habits, perform delegated procedures such as clean intermittent catheterization, provide emergency and first‑aid care as necessary.
- Move students weighing 50–80 pounds daily and repetitively; follow proper safety procedures.
- Prepare and help feed students as needed; support instruction in functional life skills.
- Review behavior plans as outlined in students’ IEPs; use positive behavior management techniques.
- Assist with lesson assignments, reinforce learning concepts, maintain discipline and order in playground, lunchroom, library, and classrooms.
- Accompany students on field trips; adjust wheelchairs, oxygen hoses, and other equipment as needed; communicate with special education teachers about concerns and observations.
- Assist in maintaining bulletin boards; may assist children with medication when trained; assist in operation of classroom equipment or assistive‑technology devices.
- Assist in recording student progress toward goals; develop instructional materials and prepare graphs and charts.
- Assist in modification of general education curriculum; participate in district training programs; receive training and implement non‑violent behavioral intervention procedures; maintain confidentiality regarding student information and records.

Experience:
Any education and experience that provides the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. Typical ways include demonstrating the ability to perform duties and responsibilities. - Knowledge of: educational principles, student behavior and characteristics, discipline and positive behavior modification techniques, correct English usage, basic mathematics, office methods and procedures, filing and records management, common office equipment, communication and behavioral strategies, deaf communication techniques, hearing disorders, basic curriculum content, record‑keeping techniques, and computer skills.
- Skill at: securing confidence and cooperation of students; dealing tactfully with students, parents, and school personnel; evaluating situations accurately and taking effective action; basic typing/computer skills; spelling correctly; reading, writing, and speaking English at a level required for successful job performance; preparing accurate records; organizing instructional materials; making mathematical computations; operating office, audio‑visual, and assistive‑technology equipment; lifting using proper techniques; understanding oral and written instructions;
using positive reinforcements; maintaining effective working relationships; moving students weighing 50–80 pounds daily and repetitively. - Licenses/Certificates: possession of CPI Certification.
- Minimum 18 years of age; high school diploma or GED required.
