Para educator Assistant III – Special Education
Highly Qualified Status (HQ)
Applicants must be highly qualified:
- High school diploma or its recognized equivalent.
- Completed at least 48 semester hours of credit at an accredited college or university, or an associate’s degree or higher, or passed the Para Pro Assessment (ETS) with a score of at least 460.
- Assist teachers in delivering individual and group instruction, including preparing lesson outlines and plans.
- Develop and maintain instructional materials, lesson outlines, and classroom aids.
- Present subject matter and reinforce learning concepts using a variety of teaching methods.
- Administer and grade examinations, assignments, and assessments.
- Observe student progress and identify problem areas, coordinating with teachers and parents.
- Manage classroom equipment, prepare audiovisual materials, and maintain classroom bulletin boards.
- Support student discipline and order in school settings including playground, lunchroom, and library.
- Provide additional academic support such as data collection, vocational training, and behaviorally based instruction as required.
- Assist in implementing behavioral support plans for students with autism spectrum disorders, including data analysis and reporting.
- When assigned to special programs, support students in Early Childhood, Integrated Kindergarten, Comprehensive Life Skills, and other SEL or hearing/vision impairment programs as described below.
- Early Childhood (ages 3‑5) special education with inclusive or small‑group settings.
- Integrated Kindergarten co‑teaching model covering kindergarten standards.
- Comprehensive Life Skills for students with cognitive disabilities, focusing on social, emotional, and cognitive skill development.
- Social Intervention Program (SIP) for students with significant emotional/behavioral needs within inclusive or self‑contained settings.
- Hearing‑Impaired and Vision‑Impaired support, including use of assistive technology and adapted materials.
- Education:
48 semester/60 quarter units in child development, education, special education, or related field, or equivalent experience. - Experience:
One year of instructional or guidance experience with students in an organized program, or two years as a Para educator aide. - Knowledge of education principles, behavior modification, basic English, mathematics, office procedures, and technology.
- Skills:
Instructional planning, assessment, effective communication with parents, record keeping, typing, and operating office equipment. - Demonstrated ability to work independently and under the direction of a supervising teacher or supervisor.
