Position: Special Education Para educator Assistant 2 EC Autism (30 hrs./wk., 182 Days)

PARA EDUCATOR ASSISTANT II – Special Education

Summary Description
Under general supervision assists teaching staff in providing individual and group instruction, developing and maintaining instructional materials and records, and performing related duties as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics
  • Regular academic instructional assistance in a Special Education classroom.
  • Required to possess additional training in data collection, communication strategies, behavior management for Autism Spectrum Disorders, and independence in preparing materials.
  • Expected to conduct screenings, provide vocational training, prepare behavioral analysis data, and participate in IEP meetings.
Responsibilities and Duties
  • Assist teaching staff with lesson planning, preparation of teaching aids, and execution of classroom instruction.
  • Present subject matter to students using a variety of methods and techniques.
  • Assist students individually or in groups with assignments and reinforce learning concepts.
  • Prepare, administer, and grade examinations and homework assignments.
  • Observe student progress, identify problem areas, and refer to classroom teacher for intervention.
  • Coordinate with classroom teachers and parents regarding student progress.
  • Set up classroom and audio‑visual equipment, order supplies, and maintain bulletin boards and lesson materials.
  • Assist in maintaining student discipline and order throughout school settings.
  • Operate standard office equipment and maintain accurate records and files.
Special Education Program Assignments
  • Early Childhood Programs (EC, EC SIP, EC STRAT) – Provide developmentally appropriate curriculum focusing on literacy, math, motor skills, communication, and social skills; conduct data collection and behavior support.
  • Integrated Kindergarten (IK) – Co‑teach kindergarten standards and curricula, support student participation in a kindergarten setting.
  • Comprehensive Life Skills (CLS) – Build critical social, emotional, and cognitive skills; adapt curriculum to meet Nevada State Standards.
  • Social Intervention Program (SIP) – Provide academic and behavioral support within inclusive or self‑contained settings; implement behavior management and positive reinforcement.
  • DHH (Deaf and Hard of Hearing) – Apply appropriate communication strategies and technology to support hearing impaired students.
  • Vision Impairment (VI) – Adapt learning materials and environments to support visual‑impaired students.
Qualifications
  • Completion of 48 semester or 60 quarter units from an accredited college or university in child development, education, special education or a related field, or a high school diploma with required experience.
  • At least one year of experience with student instructional activities or personal guidance in an organized program.
  • Knowledge of education principles, student needs, basic discipline and behavior modification, English usage, mathematics, office methods, and office equipment.
  • Skill in instructing students across academic and self‑care skill areas, preparing lesson plans and teaching aids, building student confidence, communicating with parents and staff, and managing records.
  • Typing speed and accuracy; reading, writing, and speaking English at a proficient level.
  • Ability to perform any related duties as required by supervisor.
