PARA EDUCATOR ASSISTANT I

High‑Qualified Status (HQ)

Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent and meet at least one of the following requirements: a minimum of 48 semester hours at an accredited college or university; an associate’s degree or higher; or a Para Pro Assessment score of 460 or greater.

Summary Description

Under general supervision, the Para educator Assistant I assists teaching staff in providing individual and group instruction, prepares lessons and materials, and maintains instructional records.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Unlike the Para educator Aide class, the Para educator Assistant class is routinely required to perform academic instructional assistance for a significant portion of the assignment.

Responsibilities
  • Assist teachers in a variety of classroom settings and related areas.
  • Prepare lesson outlines, plans, and teaching aids.
  • Present subject matter using diverse teaching methods and techniques.
  • Support students individually or in groups with lesson assignments.
  • Reinforce learning concepts.
  • Prepare, administer, and grade examinations and homework assignments.
  • Observe student progress, identify problem areas, and confer with teachers and parents.
  • Set up classrooms and audiovisual equipment.
  • Order supplies and equipment.
  • Maintain classroom bulletin boards.
  • Distribute and collect teaching materials.
  • Assist in maintaining student discipline and order in playgrounds, lunchrooms, halls, libraries, and study halls.
  • Operate standard office equipment.
Employment Standards – Education & Experience

The following educational and experiential prerequisites are required:

  • Completion of 48 semester (or 60 quarter) units at an accredited college or university, preferably in child development, education, or a related field.
  • Or: a high school diploma or equivalent, plus one year of experience in student instructional activities or personal guidance within an organized program.
  • Or: two years of experience as a Para educator aide or in comparable instructional roles.
When Assigned To a Title School

The same Highly Qualified Status requirements apply. Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent and meet at least one of the following: 48 semester hours at an accredited college or university; an associate’s degree or higher; or a Para Pro Assessment score of 460 or greater.

Work Environment

Typical work occurs in classroom settings, assisting teaching staff and students. The role requires frequent interaction with students, teachers, and school personnel. Physical demands include standing, walking, and sitting for extended periods, occasional lifting, bending, and reaching. The position also involves maintaining discipline and order in various school areas such as playgrounds, lunchrooms, and hallways.
