summary description

under the general supervision of the assistant controller plans, coordinates and supervises various functions within the business office, including proprietary funds, maintenance of the general ledger, and preparation of schedules and reports for the annual audit and annual comprehensive financial report (acfr). Performs related work as required.

essential duties and responsibilities
  • prepares complex financial schedules & statements.
  • monitor and record complex transactions, including revenue recognition, expense allocation, depreciation, and cost recovery.
  • complete accurate year-end closing entries, including accruals, deferrals, and capital asst adjustments.
  • perform and review bank and account reconciliations.(cash, receivables, payables, inventories, capital assets, and depreciation.)
  • prepares journal entries for maintaining account balances, correcting entries, recording transfers of expenditures, and distributing costs.
  • conduct cost and variance analysis for assigned funds.
  • prepares audit schedules for the annual audit, quarterly financial reports for the proprietary funds, acfr and schedule of expenditures of federal awards (sefa).
  • work with and provide training to staff accountants on accounting and system applications.
  • maintain and improve internal controls over financial processes and systems.
  • assists with maintaining the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and fixed assets.
  • conducts accounting for the nutrition services fund, health insurance fund, property casualty funds and workers compensation.
  • participate in financial system updates/implementation, testing, and workflow improvements.
  • maintain chart of accounts and ensure consistent coding of financial activity.

  • collaborates with various internal and external stakeholders to complete district wide projects and initiatives.
qualifications

any combination of education and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain knowledge and skills would be:

education: equivalent to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in accounting, business, or other related fields.

experience: three years of professional accounting experience. Governmental accounting experience is preferred.

knowledge of:

  • generally accepted accounting principles (gaap)
  • governmental accounting standards board (gasb)
  • fund accounting principles.
  • principles of supervision.

skill in:

  • mathematical calculations.
  • financial analysis.
  • microsoft excel (pivot tables & lookup formulas)
  • training, mentoring, or supporting accounting staff.
  • managing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines during the fiscal year.

ability to:

  • clearly communicate financial information to staff and supervisors.
  • collaborate effectively with other departments and staff.
  • work independently with minimum supervision.
