Promotional Opportunity

This is an internal recruitment only for current qualified classified City of Reno Employees

This is the entry level position for the Fire Department with responsibility for firefighting, life saving, and related work activities connected with the response to emergency and other incidents, fire prevention, equipment operation and maintenance, facility maintenance, work and skill readiness and other related tasks. The Reno Fire Department is finalizing plans for a Spring Firefighter Academy, tentatively scheduled to begin in April.

Responsibilities
  • Respond to fires and other emergency or public assistance incidents in a timely, safe, and skilled manner and participate in their control through hose laying, ladder operations, ventilation, extinguishment, salvage and other activities as part of a team.
  • Rescue person endangered by fires or other hazards and administer first aid to injured parties when assigned.
  • Conduct inspections and other fire prevention tasks including fire safety education to eliminate or reduce fire hazards and enforce fire codes.
  • Develop and maintain high levels of work knowledge and skills for various duties through training, drills and skill maintenance programs.
  • Operate and maintain properly and safely firefighting and other related equipment and apparatus in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Keep fire station and other facilities in a clean, orderly and usable condition.
  • Assist in completing other day-to-day work such as record keeping and map maintenance.
  • Perform various public information and relations tasks, as appropriate and assigned in written or oral form.
  • Maintain an adequate level of physical fitness to perform firefighting, rescue, equipment operation, and other related tasks.
  • May, when qualified and assigned, perform relief work in the capacity of a Fire Equipment Operator.
Qualifications and Training

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age at the time of appointment.

Training
:

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent

License/Certificate
:

  • Valid driver's license.
  • Valid Nevada Emergency Medical Technician certification or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician certification.

Examination Process

Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications and pass the examination for this position to be eligible for hire. The examination will consist of a Training and Experience evaluation (T&E) weighted at 100%.
