Position: Police Officer Recruit

Police Officer Recruit – Summer 2026 Academy

The Reno Police Department is seeking to fill 20+ positions for the upcoming Summer 2026 Academy, anticipated to begin in July 2026. Candidates must complete a City of Reno employment application, provide all required documentation, and pass the required testing with a qualifying score.

Responsibilities – Police Recruit
  • Attend the Law Enforcement Academy designated by the Police Department.
  • Follow the Academy’s conduct rules, Academy Manual, Department Policy, and City of Reno Policy.
  • Complete written reports and oral presentations as required by the Academy.
  • Participate in Academy training and pass all academic tests, including quizzes, mid‑term and final exams.
  • Complete physical fitness training and pass the physical fitness standards test as prescribed by the Academy and Nevada POST rules.
  • Participate in Defensive Tactics training and obtain a passing score on the final proficiency test.
  • Participate in Firearms training and obtain a passing qualification score for each firearm.
  • Participate in the Emergency Vehicle Operations Course training and obtain a passing score on the final proficiency test.
  • Complete First Aid and CPR training and obtain a passing score on a final written exam.
  • Participate in Force on Force training and obtain a passing score on the final proficiency test.
Responsibilities – Police Officer
  • Patrol assigned areas on foot, in a patrol car, on a motorcycle, or other means of transportation; check stores, businesses, houses, and other premises for burglary and other disturbances; investigate suspicious conditions.
  • Make arrests for violations of laws or ordinances; escort prisoners to incarceration and may register and book prisoners.
  • Conduct initial and supplemental investigations of crimes such as personal violence, theft, checks intelligence, juvenile, and other cases; investigate missing persons, lost children, and runaways; interview witnesses and complainants.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent such as a GED.
  • U.S. citizen.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • At least 20 years of age.
Additional Screening

Background investigations will verify the accuracy of application statements and assess suitability for the officer role. Candidates may be required to complete a polygraph examination, medical, visual, psychological, and drug screening at the City’s expense.

Evaluation Standards
  • Felony convictions or offenses that would be felonies if committed in this state.
  • Offenses involving moral turpitude or unlawful use, sale, or possession of controlled substances.
  • Engagement in use of marijuana after submission of application.
  • Documented history of physical violence.

Exam and Selection

The examination consists of a written test weighted 100% of the final grade. Multiple test dates are scheduled; selection is on a first‑come, first‑served basis. Successful applicants will be notified to schedule their test and must pass the NV POST Physical Fitness Test within 30 days of acceptance.
