Under the direct supervision of the Manager of Government Affairs as task supervisor, the Student Worker for the Office of Government and Community Engagement will have the opportunity to assist the development and implementation of the University's governmental engagement program and how it cultivates and enhances the University's relationships at the federal, state and the local government levels. The student worker will have the opportunity to assist with outreach, communication, GOTV campaigns, and event planning, focusing on strategic government and community engagement.

This includes organizing meetings, workshops, and events, as well as monitoring local government changes and preparing communications for key stakeholders and elected officials. The Student Worker will learn and support strategic initiatives, events, and advocacy efforts related to higher education priorities.

Opportunities and Leadership Development:

  • Helping to plan community and University events
  • Assisting with federal, state, and local government policy work
  • Planning and executing events and strategy with elected officials
  • Attending government meetings and providing key memos and notes for University leadership
  • Working on community engagement and Latinx initiatives

Goals and Expectations of the Student Worker:

  • A thorough understanding of how the University works with local, state, and federal government entities, and how our department seeks to advocate on behalf of our institution
  • Knowledge of how to properly plan an on-campus event with an elected official, including parking needs, agendas for stakeholders, and clear purpose/plan to execute successfully
  • A working understanding of how various University departments work together to achieve a shared goal
  • Our expectation is that the Student Worker is interested in learning and growing, and is willing to be flexible and involved with various quick-moving tasks

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be a degree-seeking undergraduate student at the University of Nevada, Reno during the Fall '26 semester
  • An intermediate knowledge of local, state, and federal government structure
  • Proficiency using Outlook and formatting documents in Microsoft Word and Excel, and Power Point
  • Must have a driver's license and personal transportation

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Desire to learn about the Government Affairs and the community and advocacy process
  • Individual should be comfortable with both internal-research and external-networking portions of this position
  • Strong work ethic and willingness to learn new tasks
  • Flexibility and creative with project instructions

Schedule:

Applicants must be available for work during our office hours of 8-5 PM, Monday-Friday, and must work at least 3 hours in a given shift. Some availability on weekends for events is preferable. During the Nevada Legislative Session, role would shift most days to be in Carson City office.

Compensation Grade:

Student Employee Level 1

Exempt No Full-Time Equivalent 37.5%
