Responsibilities
  • The Medical Assistant is accountable for assisting the providers in front and back office procedures. The incumbent has the added responsibility of providing a direct liaison between provider and patient, ensuring patient questions or concerns are addressed by the appropriate provider. This position may float to various sites within the health system.
  • In Medical Home practice settings, Medical Assistants will be an integral part of the patient’s care team and work closely with other care team members, including healthcare providers and nurses. They may be required to assist with rooming, reviewing medications, goal setting, patient education, tracking and coordinating patient test results, reminding patients of overdue health maintenance topics, and assisting other care team members in delivering patient-centered care.

and Scope

The Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting the provider in back office duties, including escorting the patient from the waiting room to the examination room promptly; taking vital signs; maintaining examination rooms’ stock; documenting patient communications; preparing lab specimens for processing; completing referral forms and obtaining authorizations; scheduling tests; handling calls and filing into patient charts; administering treatments and medications per provider order in accordance with policies.

Challenges include delivering patient care with changes in procedures and policies, increased information per patient, and staffing fluctuations. The incumbent must provide care appropriate to the age of the patient and meet unit/department age-specific competency standards. Professionalism and diplomacy are required when interacting with patients, families, physicians, and staff. The position requires compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory requirements and third-party reimbursement rules.

Technical/Clinical Requirements (Orthopedics Specialty)
  • The position requires knowledge of orthopedic bracing and casting; responsibilities include application, medication, repair and fitting of casts, splints, and braces.
  • Apply casts/splints per physician direction; fit casts, splints, braces for comfort and to avoid pressure; trim, split, remove casts as needed; adjust braces to physician specifications; document patient education related to cast, splints, or braces; provide cast care and brace instructions.
  • Instruct on crutches and other mobilization aids; prepare, stock and clean exam rooms; stock exam rooms and manage supplies; maintain tools and equipment; operate fluoroscopy equipment as directed; coordinate with vendors; assist in patient workups; complete forms prior to physician review; assist in operating room, inpatient units and emergency room as needed.

This position does provide patient care.

  • Education: Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing, and speaking English.
  • Experience: Multi-physician office practice experience highly preferred. CMA, RMA, CCMA, NCMA, NRCMA, EMT 1 or completion of an externship (with leadership approval) preferred.
  • Licenses: Current State of Nevada license for Office Laboratory Assistant or Certified Laboratory Assistant or an application must be submitted within 90 days of employment; failure to apply or obtain license within 90 days will result in discharge. (Excludes listed departments).
  • Certifications: Current AHA BLS or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment required. Some positions may require DOT and Non-DOT drug testing; 90 days to obtain and maintain certification. Preferred certifications include: CCMA, CMAC, CMA, NCCT CMA, NRCMA, RMA, NREMT, Nevada EMT, and other listed credentials.
  • Computer / Typing: Must possess, or obtain within 90 days, computer skills to complete online learning requirements and access online forms and policies.
