Position: On-Call Interpreter Specialist II - Spanish (see additional job information)

interpreter specialist (on‑call interpreter specialist i, ii & iii)

under general supervision, performs basic to moderately difficult oral interpreting services to families and students between english and a designated language or languages in a variety of settings; and performs other duties as required.

interpreter specialist i positions are assigned to schools and general assignments (e.g., parent‑teacher conferences, school events, brown bag lunch) where standard interpretive skills and techniques can be used.

interpreter specialist ii positions are assigned to particular programs (e.g., iep) where in‑depth content matters must be translated in more complex settings with complex educational terms that need to be accurately interpreted for parents and staff.

interpreter specialist iii positions are assigned to particular programs (e.g., truancy meetings, parent university, study circles, town hall meetings) and use of interpretation equipment is required for every assignment. Interpreter specialist iii duties and responsibilities normally require a high percentage of time in more complex interpreting situations such as presentations that require simultaneous interpretation of complex conversations using translation equipment.

exemplary duties/responsibilities
  • provide interpreting services for school/administration personnel, parents and other individuals as assigned.
  • fluent interpreting skills and ability to see language difficulties and adjust message without change of content.
  • translate orally all documents presented by parents, school personnel and other individuals.
  • assist parents filling out questionnaires for assessment purposes as designated by the special education department.
  • address interpreter inquiries from parents and explain school jargon, acronyms and phrases for meaning and appropriateness.
  • perform simultaneous interpretation using the translation equipment as required based on the complexity of the assignment.
  • assist in interpreting responsibilities relative to student discipline issues, parent conferences, individual education plan meetings for students, open houses, and parent meetings; policy and procedure communications to parents and students; assisting administration and staff in problem solving, as needed; and functioning as an interpreter for parents when dealing with issues of concern by parents.
employment standards
  • education/experience: any combination equivalent to education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
  • high school diploma or equivalent; and three (3) years of progressively experience as interpreter. Additional related education or certification(s) may substitute for the required experience.
  • bachelor's degree in targeted language or related field; and two (2) years of progressively experience as interpreter.

knowledge of: grammar, spelling, vocabulary and equipment; familiarity with computers. Knowledge of the principles and techniques of effective verbal and written communication in the english language. Ability to verbally translate spoken material from english into a designated second language(s).

licenses/certificates

incumbents assigned by the district to perform formal oral interpretation duties for interpreter specialist level i incumbents must be able to pass wcsd oral assessment. Incumbents selected must be able to demonstrate basic oral targeted language translation competencies by passing the oral assessment. For interpreter specialist level ii, in addition to the wcsd oral assessment, the incumbent must possess an interpreter certificate from a certifiable higher education institution to demonstrate bilingual proficiency.

Interpreter specialist iii must meet the same requirements as interpreter specialist i & ii, have experience, be qualified to do simultaneous or consecutive interpretation, and must be able to demonstrate.
