The Victim Witness Advocate Supervisor leads the Police Department's Victim Services Unit (VSU), overseeing the daily operations and professional development of a team of victim advocates. This role offers the opportunity to combine compassionate service with strong leadership by guiding staff, coordinating complex and high-risk advocacy efforts, and helping ensure victims receive timely, trauma-informed support and resources.

In addition to supervising day-to-day operations, the Victim Witness Advocate Supervisor plays an important role in shaping and strengthening victim services. Responsibilities include ensuring compliance with applicable laws and best practices, leading community outreach and education efforts, contributing to grant reporting and strategic planning, and building collaborative relationships with community organizations and partner agencies.

This supervisory-level position is ideal for an experienced victim services professional who is ready to take on a leadership role, navigate complex situations with sound judgment, and help advance a responsive, effective, and compassionate victim services program.

  • Supervises, coordinates, and reviews the work of assigned staff; assigns tasks, coordinates schedules, monitors workload, and ensures goals and objectives are met.
  • Coaches, trains, and develops staff; provides guidance, evaluates performance, and participates in corrective action or disciplinary processes as appropriate.
  • Manages program budgets; monitors expenditures, recommends resource allocations, and participates in grant proposals and reporting.
  • Oversees public outreach, education, and volunteer programs; prepares materials, conducts presentations, and maintains community partnerships.
  • Provides direct advocacy and support to victims of crime; assists victims at crime scenes, hospitals, or other safe locations; provides information on victims' rights and resources.
  • Maintains accurate records, prepares reports, and ensures compliance with departmental policies, procedures, and legal requirements.
  • Represents the VSU in meetings with internal and external stakeholders; serves as a resource to community partners and professional groups.

The following minimum qualifications are required to be met at the time of application.

Education

A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in criminal justice, public or business administration, social work, psychology, human services, or a related field.

Each full year of work experience in social work, counseling, or victim advocacy beyond the four-year requirement will substitute for one year of the required education (30 semester or 45 quarter-hour credits).

Experience

Four years of increasingly responsible social work, counseling, or victim advocacy experience, including administrative and/or lead supervisory experience.

Master's degree in public or business administration will substitute for the administrative and/or lead supervisory experience.

Licenses and Certifications

Valid driver's license.

Requirements of the Position
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation meeting the standards required for non-sworn field personnel assigned to the Police Department, which may include fingerprinting, criminal history review, and other suitability assessments necessary for access to Police Department facilities and systems.
  • Must successfully obtain and maintain required training and authorization for access to criminal justice information systems, including NCIC and NIBRS, within six months of hire.

  • City of Reno classified employees who are veterans
  • City of Reno classified employees who are not veterans
  • City of Reno non-classified employees and external candidates who are veterans
