Job Overview
Sierra Medical Center is part of Northern Nevada Health System, a regional multi‑facility system that has excelled at offering quality care to residents of the greater Truckee Meadows. Sierra Medical Center is a 170‑bed acute care hospital offering services including 24/7 ER care, cardiology, oncology, labor and delivery, level II NICU, surgical and orthopedic services, and more.
We are seeking a Registered Nurse – First Assistant for a per‑diem opportunity. The RN will provide the surgical team with assistance within the operating room and other similar settings, performing tasks that are beyond the scope of practice for registered nurses without RNFA education and training. The RN works interdependently with the surgeon, assisting with intra‑operative procedures and post‑operative tasks while complying with state laws and nursing practice acts.
The Certified RNFA does not concurrently function as the scrub nurse.
- Perform first assisting role interdependently with the surgeon.
- Assist with room set‑up and tear down to facilitate patient flow.
- Maintain hemostasis by direct pressure, appropriate surgical instrument use, placement of ties, suture ligatures, chemical hemostatic agents, or other measures under the surgeon’s direct supervision.
- Perform immediate post‑operative subcutaneous injection of local anesthetic agent or cocktail before dressing application.
- Provide hemostasis and other intra‑operative technical functions that assist the physician in performing a safe operation, including local infiltration or topical application of a local anesthetic at the operative site.

- Current Nevada license
- Current OR certification (CNOR) from the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN)
- CRNFA or RNAS‑C; must maintain currency with both CNOR and CRNFA or RNAS‑C certifications for employment
- Eligible for a grandfather clause if currently employed without a bachelor’s degree, provided currency with both CNOR and RNAS‑C certification
- Current American Heart Association BLS, ACLS, and PALS (if applicable)
- NRP if working in obstetrical areas
