Purpose:
Under the general direction of the Supervisor/Manager and Shared Governance Council, the Registered Nurse provides optimal patient care utilizing knowledge and skills within the context of evidence based nursing practice and the theory of human caring. The Registered Nurse is accountable for individualized patient care and outcomes over an entire episode of care.
Nature and Scope:
The Registered Nurse must provide optimal patient care through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients and families while in the Imaging Department.
The Registered Nurse will communicate pertinent findings to the assigned radiologist in the pre-procedure, procedural, and post-procedure phases. The Registered Nurse will be responsible for medication administration, monitoring, procedural documentation, procedural room circulation, and nurse reporting to the receiving nursing staff. The Registered Nurse will provide this same standard of care during on-call coverage as well.
When possible, the family or those significant to the family are considered as part of the assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation efforts of the Registered Nurse. The Registered Nurse coordinates care between other professionals.
Evidence based nursing practice, along with critical thinking skills are required to provide optimally safe patient care when interacting with internal and external contacts and exercising judgment and making decisions. Professional nursing practice is congruent with the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics.
In addition, the Registered Nurse will complete a minimum of four PICC insertions per month, pass both written and clinical maintenance of PICC lines, and will communicate with Quality Management and Infection Control to better serve and care for PICC line customers.
The Registered Nurse must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on physical, motor/sensor, psychosocial, and safety appropriate to the age of the patient served and meets standards of quality as measured by the unit/department age specific competency standards.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
1. Demonstrates behavior consistent with the RENOWN HEALTH Standards of Conduct.
2. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on physical, motor/sensory, psychosocial, and safety appropriate to the age of the patient served.
3. Ability to interact effectively with persons of differing socioeconomic, cultural and religious backgrounds.
4. Knowledge of sedatives and narcotic analgesics including side effects, contraindications, and concomitant effects. Successful completion of on-line competency sedation module.
5. The ability to thoroughly interview the patient and/or guardian to obtain surgical and health history to make appropriate assessments for medical intervention.
6. Ability to communicate with patients and patients' families, physicians, nurses, techs, and other professional personnel in a clear, concise, and appropriate manner.
7. Knowledge and experience in IV starts in all age groups including use of central lines and Groshong catheters for drug infusion and maintenance.
8. Skills to understand radiology filing and clerical functions.
9. Working knowledge of hospital and department computer systems.
10. Ability to utilize proper radiation, magnetic and nuclear field safety measures.
11. Ability to make independent decisions and have problem solving skills to effectively handle MRI occurrences.
12. Ability to make independent decisions and have problem solving skills to effectively handle imaging occurrences.
13. Knowledge of all routine nursing care tasks for PICC line including: dressing changes, tubing/injection cap change, flushing, blood withdrawal procedures, and PICC exchanges.
14. Knowledge of possible complications associated with PICC line and recommended methods to manage those complications.
15. Knowledge of indications, contraindications and precautions for PICC line insertion.
Ability to provide appropriate documentation related to placement of PICC lines.
