Job Description

The University of Nevada is looking to hire a Post-doc or Research Scientist who will conduct research under the supervision of Dr. David Hanigan. The post-doc or research scientist will have the opportunity to collaborate across multiple departments and projects funded by the Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program, the National Science Foundation, and the Army Corps of Engineers. The position is available immediately.

The post-doc or research scientist will lead and/or support research in destroying PFAS in AFFF stockpiles and PFAS-treatment waste streams, determining the fate of gas-phase per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, investigating products of incomplete thermal destruction of PFAS during incineration and GAC regeneration, and potential remediation approaches for PFAS leaching from contaminated pavement. Other ongoing research projects in which the post-doc or research scientist may collaborate are related to water resiliency in arid regions, determining the impacts of wildfire on drinking water source quality, and reducing disinfection byproduct formation in drinking water.

The candidate should have strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills and be eager to work with his/her hands daily. A PhD in environmental engineering, chemistry, or closely related field is required at the time of appointment. A background in mass spectrometry chromatography, particularly in LC-MS/MS applications, and FTIR will be viewed favorably. Leadership skills and an ability to work on more than one project are required as the post-doc or research scientist will help to advise PhD, MS, and undergraduate students associated with multiple active research areas.

The start date is flexible and salary and title commensurate with experience. Benefits are included, which include a generous 19.25% employer-matched retirement contribution. The appointment will be for 1 year with the possibility of renewal. The post-doc or research scientist will be encouraged to present at national conferences, collaborate on and individually develop research proposals, and publish results in high-impact peer-reviewed journals.

Dr. Hanigan joined the department in the Fall of 2016. His team broadly focuses on water treatment, environmental chemistry, and analytical methods.
