About This Role

Fiber Tel is looking for a HDD Operator/Locator for our Sparks/Reno, NV location. A successful HDD Operator is specially trained and has expertise in locating for horizontal/directional drill rigs and product support equipment. This individual will set up and complete drilling underground boreholes and pull back the required conduit or pipe. As a Directional Driller/Equipment Operator you will be responsible for running equipment such as a Vermeer or Ditch Witch directional drill, vacuum truck, mud truck, excavator, forklift, dump truck, locator, and other support tools.
Pay: $30‑40/hr.

Responsibilities

All phases of telecommunication construction include but are not limited to: loading, driving, delivery, digging, removal, and placement of various types, sizes, and weights of construction materials and equipment.

  • Locate for horizontal directional drill for installation of underground conduit and fiber‑optic cable.
  • Ensure safety of the public and other underground utilities.
  • Operate horizontal directional drill.
  • Assist in potholing and remediation.
  • Assist with setting hand holes and completing tie‑ins.
  • Read and comprehend utility locates.
  • Set equipment up, including drill, water tanks, and grounding the machine.
  • Formulate and mix drilling mud for site conditions.
  • Perform proper reaming and pull‑back methods for existing conditions.
  • Oversee laborers/crew members, monitor time usage.
  • Clean and maintain equipment, check fluid levels, conduct visual inspections, perform pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections, submit required reports, and perform needed maintenance including winterizing.
  • Communicate with supervisor daily to turn in required reports (bore log, vehicle maintenance reports, crew time logs, etc.).
  • Follow job specifications and company policies.
  • Comply with safety procedures on and off the project site.
  • Strive for optimal production while working safely and producing quality work.
Qualifications
  • Must pass a pre‑employment drug screen and background check.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license or be eligible and willing to obtain the required license for the position.
  • Maintain a good driving record.
  • Basic knowledge and ability to operate various types of utility trucks and equipment safely.
  • Basic knowledge and ability to use hand tools and equipment safely.
  • Class A Commercial Driver’s License is a plus (higher wage scales apply to CDL holders).
  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers, employees, etc.
  • Willing and able to work in all weather conditions.
  • Able to lift or carry 50 lbs regularly and up to 100 lbs as needed, with or without assistance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous construction experience, preferably in the telecommunications industry.
  • Knowledge of established horizontal/directional drill locator/operator procedures and techniques.
  • Ability to perform horizontal/directional drill locator/operator procedures and duties.
  • Ability to travel.
Working Conditions

This is a full‑time hourly position, expected to work at least 40 hours per week. The role operates outdoors and is regularly exposed to extreme cold, rain, sleet, snow, humidity, high temperatures, and high wind. The environment may occasionally involve natural gas or electrical shock risks, and moderate‑to‑loud noise levels. Duties may vary in terrain, traffic, urban, or rural settings.

Physical Requirements
  • Stand for long periods (up to 12 hours), tolerate extreme weather conditions.
