summary description
under general supervision, routine mechanical and electrical maintenance, and repair work on a variety of gardening and/or custodial equipment. Also performs related maintenance on school appliance incumbent performs related work as required.
essential duties and responsibilities
- performs repair and overhaul work on small engines associated with machines including, but not limited to, lawn mowers, vacuum cleaners, and buffers.
- performs repairs on a variety of appliances including, but not limited to, washers, dryers, and refrigerators.
- identifies causes of mechanical trouble, dismantles equipment, using hand tools and gauges/meters to examine parts for defects.
- replaces or repairs parts, such as rings and bearings, motors, switches, hoses, and accessories to equipment using hand tools.
- cleans, adjusts, or rebuilds equipment.
- tests for performances and replaces machine parts as needed.
- utilizes a variety of testing equipment such as ammeters, voltmeters, mustimeters, and ac/dc indicators, measuring gauges to determine malfunctions and the need for repair.
- records maintenance and repairs performed, parts used, and cost.
- performs regular preventative maintenance such as checking for electrical shorts and replacing parts, as needed.
- stocks and maintains shop inventory for parts and supplies.
- cleans and maintains shop facility and equipment.
- may develop estimate labor and repair costs.
- trains custodians and groundskeepers in appropriate use and maintenance of equipment
- perform other duties as assigned.
- will work on fuel systems, ignition systems, hydraulic systems, instrumentation, carburetors, and other necessary power equipment.
- may do electrical and gas welding.
- will work on equipment such as, but not limited to, floor scrubbers, carpet extractors, and battery chargers associated with custodial equipment.
- will work on appliances such as, but not limited to, washers, dryers, and refrigerators.
- collaborates with various internal and external stakeholders to complete district wide projects and initiatives.
any combination of education and experience that could provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain knowledge and skills would be:
education: completion of a recognized two (2) year small engine mechanic or electrical/electronics apprenticeship program.
and
experience: two (2) years of experience in the repair and maintenance of a variety of small engines associated with carpentry and ground maintenance and/or electric motor driven equipment and appliances.
or
experience: four (4) years of experience in the repair and maintenance of a variety of electrical custodial equipment and appliances or small engines associated with carpentry and ground maintenance.
licenses/certificates:
- possession of or ability to obtain a valid nevada state class a commercial driver's license (cdl), with a driving record acceptable to the district.
- ahera 16 hour asbestos training, asbestos certification is required within the first 12 months of employment. Employer will provide training.
- osha lead action training. Certification may be required within the first 12 months of employment. Employer will provide training.
may be called upon on off-hours for school emergencies, such as burglaries, vandalism, fires, snow removal, equipment failures, flooding, etc.

- electrical and electronic custodial equipment and appliances.
- basic computer skills.
- using shop equipment and hand tools to make major and minor repairs.
- diagnosing and repairing common electrical and mechanical defects.
- inspecting, rejecting, rebuilding, or replacing faulty parts.
- reading, interpreting, and applying information from schematic and mechanical drawings, diagrams, and technical repair manuals.
- tracing instrumentation and electrical systems.
- making estimates of materials and labor costs.
- preparing and maintaining operational and inventory records and reports.
- working independently.
- advise others on proper use and maintenance of equipment.
- understand and conduct oral and written instructions.
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in course of work.
