The primary purpose of this position is perform maintenance, repair, and renovation of facilities, buildings, and equipment including all off station locations. The incumbent is responsible for general maintenance and repair requirements as established by the Chief, Facilities Management Service, for the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System (VASNHCS). Incumbent works under the direct supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor or the Facilities Operations Supervisor.

Duties
  • Major Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
    Proficiency in reading, interpreting, and applying complex blueprints, wiring diagrams, rough sketches, manufacturer's instructions and literature, and other written guides and work instructions and really understand oral instructions, specifications, and requirements. Ability to plan, layout, and install equipment and systems. Replaces items, such as, safety devices, thermostats, heating elements, overload switches, heater strips, magnetic coils, humidistats, and condensers. Knowledge to install, inspect, maintain, overhaul, modify repair, align, calibrate, and test various types of equipment including commercial and domestic dietetic and kitchen equipment, and other Health Care System equipment.

    Observes and tests for correct operation of all parts of the refrigeration cycle. Tests for refrigerant leaks and evacuates moisture from refrigeration systems and components when needed. Knowledge to repair and adjust air conditioning and heating controls such as pressure and vacuum regulating controls, time delay relays, gauges, temperature controls, and grid bias circuits in control panels. Install new outlets, relays, switches, and light fixtures in existing systems and to test circuits to see if they are complete after making repairs.

    Installs, repairs and maintains equipment and fixtures to existing plumbing systems such as pressure reducing valves, hot water heaters and/or storage tanks, circulating pumps, drinking fountains, water closets and urinals. Makes frequent inspections of equipment and controls, making all necessary adjustments to valves, relays, thermostats, and other controls to alter or change conditions to prescribed test temperatures and/or chamber pressures.

    Knowledge of local and national safety and building codes and ability to conduct work in accordance with established regulations, including Health Care System regulations, with respect to life safety. Performs other related duties as assigned.

    Physical Requirements:

    The work requires walking, standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts and carries parts and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds and occasionally handles items weighing up to 100 Pounds. Personal assistance and/or lifting devices are used when appropriate to prevent injury. Incumbent works in hospitals/hazardous environment and may be required to wear a respirator.

    Works in tiring positions for prolonged periods. Frequent standing, bending, stooping, crouching, and arm movement. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 45 pounds. May occasionally lift heavier items with assistance. Incumbent must possess a valid driver's license and be able to drive long distances within a shift.
