Position: HUMAN SERVICES INTAKE SCREENER

Under general supervision, performs a variety of intake duties to support the delivery of case management and intervention services; performs related work as required.

This is an Open Competitive/Countywide Promotional recruitment being conducted to fill a current full‑time vacancy in the Washoe County Human Services Agency. The list established from this recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur.

Schedule Requirements (Current Vacancy):
This position works a graveyard shift, Wednesday–Saturday, 10:00 PM–8:00 AM, including weekend coverage. A hybrid schedule will be available following the initial training period.

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, psychology, social work, sociology, education, or a closely related field.

License Or Certificate: A valid driver’s license is required at time of appointment and must be maintained for continued employment in this classification.

The Ideal Candidate Will
  • An internship in public child welfare or fieldwork related to the profession is desirable*
  • Have a proven ability to work in a fast‑paced environment
  • Have effective interpersonal communication skills with clients from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds, division staff, representatives of other departments, and the general public - communicating with empathy and professionalism even in emotionally charged or hostile interactions
  • Have previous exposure and experience with protective services for diverse and vulnerable populations
  • Have written communication skills in both formal and informal situations with the ability to translate detailed, sensitive information gathered during interviews into clear, factual, and well‑organized intake reports and case histories
  • Demonstrate good judgment and employ critical thinking to identify issues, gather additional and clarifying information, and seek consultation and guidance in support of departmental goals
  • Have the ability to work a flexible schedule that may include days, evenings, weekends and/or holidays, recognizing that reports of abuse, neglect, and crisis situations can occur at any time and require consistent, dependable coverage
  • Have the ability to cooperate in a strong teamwork driven environment
  • Be bilingual, having the ability to communicate effectively with non‑English‑speaking clients and community members

The Washoe County Employees Association (WCEA) Non‑Supervisory Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) covers the Human Services Intake Screener position.

Background checks will be conducted on selected applicants through the State of Nevada and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Per the Washoe County Background and Reference Checks Policy, new and rehired employees are required to submit to a fingerprint based background investigation. Effective October 1, 2026, the $40.00 fee associated with this background investigation will be paid by the employee (if applicable) and deducted automatically from the first paycheck. Employment is contingent upon the results of the background check, although a record of conviction will not necessarily bar an applicant from employment.

Washoe County requires its employees to reside in the state of Nevada or neighboring California communities such as Truckee, South Lake Tahoe or Susanville as of their first day of work.
