Overview
Highway Maintenance Workers in Reno/Sparks, Nevada support NDOT operations during the spring and summer seasons. Certified by the Nevada Department of Transportation, they operate complex maintenance and construction equipment to preserve roadway surfaces, maintain roadside slopes, shoulders, culverts, and ditches, and repair or replace guardrails, markers, guide posts, and fences. Incumbents perform routine maintenance, summer improvement projects, and emergency response. These positions support up to six months of employment and may require work in inclement weather.

Responsibilities- Operate and perform preventive maintenance and minor repair on light, medium and heavy‑duty equipment such as rotary snowplows, motor graders, crawlers/tractors, backhoes, asphalt distributors, chip spreaders, cold planers, paint strippers, vacuum sweepers, and culvert cleaners.
- Serve as certified operator for Highway Maintenance Worker I’s and II’s; oversee equipment operation and provide training in safety policies.
- Install long line, solid, skip, and gore lines; measure and install permanent and temporary pavement markings.
- Apply chip and flush seals for maintenance overlays, perform cold milling and inlays with hot asphalt, and submit maintenance data to the Management System.
- Establish and maintain traffic controls using accepted methods to reroute traffic, control speed, and ensure safety in maintenance zones and accident scenes.
- Mix salt and sand, load chemicals, and apply anti‑icing materials; remove snow with dump trucks, plows, spreaders, and pre‑wetting equipment.
- Maintain radio contact with base station, maintenance personnel, and law enforcement, using the Intelligent Transportation System and Incident Command System protocols.
- Install, repair, and replace roadway signs, signposts, bulbs, fixtures, sensors, and overhead panels.
- Monitor contract compliance, conduct quality control inspections, and test materials and completed contractor work.
- Maintain landscaped right‑of‑way areas, trim trees, replace dead vegetation, and perform mowing and reseeding.
- Remove roadway and roadside debris, excess dirt, vegetation, and any biohazards.
- Respond to accidents and fatalities, completing required documentation.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- One year of experience performing basic highway maintenance work or one year as a Highway Maintenance Worker I in Nevada State service.
- Working knowledge of herbicide/insecticide application procedures and equipment.
- General knowledge of repairing highway roadbed, surface, shoulders, drainage facilities, traffic control and routing in maintenance zones, erosion control, snow removal techniques, landscaping, dust control, endangered species protection, and incident command systems.
- Ability to safely operate and maintain hand and power tools associated with routine highway maintenance, and to read and understand the Maintenance Management System Manual.
- Willingness to work in inclement weather and during emergency operations.
