Overview of Position

Itinerant Special Education Instructional Assistant – 4 openings available beginning at the start of the 2026/27 school year, pending final work year calendar. This role supports students with disabilities ages 3–22 across multiple school sites within a designated region, working under direction of special education teachers and specialists.

• Adapt classroom activities and materials under teacher direction, ensuring participation of all special education students.
• Administer tests, homework, grades, and related materials to assist teachers in evaluating student progress.
• Provide first-aid and medical assistance as required.
• Support students with personal care needs due to medical conditions or physical limitations.
• Attend meetings and in‑service presentations (e.g., CPR, first aid, emergency procedures) to acquire and convey information pertinent to job functions.
• Collaborate with teachers to evaluate student progress and implement IEP objectives.
• Communicate with teachers and parents via phone calls, e‑mails, and meetings to report on student progress.
• Direct and implement behavioral plans for students with behavior disorders, ensuring safety and consistency.
• Instruct students in academic, social, and daily living skills in individual and group settings.
• Maintain instructional materials and student records, ensuring availability and reliability.
• Monitor students during assigned periods in various school environments to provide a safe and positive learning experience.
• Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure effective functioning of the work unit.

Reports to the building principal if assigned through staffing formulas; if centrally based, reports to the assigned Special Education Supervisor.

• Basic math calculations (fractions, percents, ratios).
• Reading manuals, writing documents in prescribed formats, and following complex oral instructions.
• Instructional procedures and practices; age-appropriate student activities; safety procedures; conflict resolution; stages of child development/behavior.

• Non-technical task execution with potential skill upgrades as job conditions change.
• Adhering to safety practices; operating standard office equipment; maintaining accurate records.

• Gather and collate data; work with equipment given standardized methods.
• Flexibility to work in diverse circumstances and with interruptions.
• Problem‑solving to identify issues and create action plans.
• Adapt to changing work priorities; communicate with diverse groups; maintain confidentiality; work as part of a team.
• Basic keyboard and computing skills; basic signing may be required.

• High‑school diploma or equivalent; at least one of the following: qualifying PESB para-educator assessment score; associate degree or higher; 72 quarter/48 semester credits at 100-level or higher; completed apprenticeship as a para-educator.
• No minimum years of experience specified.
• Preferred: experience working with children.
• Valid State of Washington driver’s license.
• Completed Secure Training, CPR, First Aid.
• Criminal Justice fingerprint background clearance.

Position includes 6% premium pay above the regular Special Education Instructional Assistant salary. Benefits are administered by the Washington State Healthcare Authority under the School Employees Benefits Board; eligibility depends on hours worked.
