DSHS FTAA Stationary Engineer 3

Bring your expertise to the next level! We’re looking for a senior-level Stationary Engineer 3 to perform skilled engineering and repair work at our Yakima Valley School in Selah, WA.

As a Stationary Engineer 3, you’re not just running boilers—you’re leading the charge in the operation, maintenance, and compliance of high-pressure heating plants, featuring two or more steam-generating units. You’ll work with advanced combustion control systems, ensuring everything runs smoothly and safely.

Some of What You’ll Do

  • Plan, assign, and supervise skilled/semi-skilled workers or helpers in the operation, maintenance, and repair of steam boilers, auxiliary equipment, stationary engines, compressors, pumps, steam and water lines, and controls
  • Oversee preventative maintenance programs and maintain daily activity logs
  • Ensure steam plants meet all regulatory standards (Labor and Industries Boiler Laws and Rules, WAC, RCWs)
  • Observe, troubleshoot, and repair gauges, meters, pumps, boilers, controls, and safety equipment for three steam-generating units and hot water systems
  • Operate and maintain feed pumps, condensate pumps, deaerators, and emergency generators
  • Monitor and manage the boiler plant chemical program to stay within specifications
  • Respond to on-site after-hours and weekend incidents as the lead maintenance authority, evaluating and reporting to the Plant Manager or their designee

What we're looking for

  • Ability to: test and analyze operation of steam boilers and auxiliary equipment; instruct and supervise others; keep records; make written reports; perform heavy manual labor; work under and withstand extremes of temperature.
  • Knowledge of: boiler law; methods, fuels, materials, and tools used in operation and maintenance of high-pressure boilers and auxiliary equipment; boiler room safety; heating, lighting, ventilating, power, and other related mechanical equipment; standard types of automatic controls.
  • Prepare and maintain basic project reports and records including the completion of work requests.
  • Work proficiently with computer programs Excel, Powerpoint, Word, and Asset Planner.

Who should apply

  • Four years of experience in the operation and repair of high-pressure boilers and heating equipment OR
  • One year of experience as Stationary Engineer 2 in State service

Key Skills & Knowledge

  • Ability to test and analyze steam boilers and auxiliary equipment
  • Strong leadership: instruct and supervise others, keep records, and write clear reports
  • Capable of heavy manual labor and working under extreme temperature conditions
  • In-depth knowledge of boiler law, fuels, materials, and tools for high-pressure boiler operations, safety, and controls
  • Proficiency with computer programs (Excel, Powerpoint, Word, Asset Planner)
  • Familiarity with auxiliary equipment: feedwater pumps, air compressors, fuel oil pumps, steam distribution piping, heat recovery systems (economizers, flash tanks), condensate receivers, and transfer pumps
