Overview
The King County Wastewater Treatment Division (WTD) is seeking a high‑performing Senior Environmental Compliance Specialist to lead and enhance environmental compliance programs across municipal wastewater treatment plants, pump stations, and wet‑weather treatment facilities located throughout the greater Seattle region.
Responsibilities- Visit all WTD operational facilities to review existing practices, identify gaps, and meet with operators, engineers, and mechanics.
- Design, implement, and improve programs to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations and applicable permits.
- Develop a network across King County divisions and promote standardization of compliance approaches where appropriate.
- Identify risks, communicate findings to leadership, and influence decisions that protect public health and the environment.
- Partner with frontline personnel to understand their needs and constraints, and build user‑friendly programs.
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering, environmental science, environmental management, biology, chemistry, or a related field.
- Direct, hands‑on experience developing, sustaining, and implementing environmental compliance programs.
- Experience reading and interpreting permits and regulations.
- Work or audit experience in an industrial/manufacturing environment.
- Data analysis skills in a professional setting.
- Experience interfacing directly with environmental regulatory agencies.
- Ability to communicate risks and plans to senior leadership.
- Customer Focus – Build strong relationships and deliver customer‑centric solutions.
- Collaboration – Work effectively with others to meet shared objectives.
- Effective Communication – Deliver clear multi‑mode communications to diverse audiences.

- Process Optimization – Continuously improve work processes for maximum efficiency.
- Valid, unencumbered Washington State driver’s license.
- 8+ years in a full‑time regulatory compliance role.
- Experience developing and sustaining environmental compliance programs within Washington State.
- Professional engineering (PE), Chesapeake Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), or similar credential.
- Potential exposure to chemicals, noise, confined space, odor, fall hazards, and viral contaminants.
- Work locations: 1200 Monster Rd SW, Renton, WA; 22505 WA‑9, Woodinville, WA; 1400 Discovery Park Blvd, Seattle, WA.
- Full‑time, 40‑hour work week with flexible scheduling options.
