Role SummaryThe SBA Underwriter/Credit Analyst plays a critical role in the SBA loan origination process. The position ensures SBA program eligibility in accordance with SBA underwriting standards and guidelines, performs financial analysis and credit underwriting, and supports SBA 7(a) and SBA Express loan products. The underwriter analyzes requests, assists with credit approval recommendations, reviews financial statements, tax returns, and supporting documentation, and conducts quality assurance before loan closing.
Responsibilities also include annual reviews, industry risk analysis, and other tasks required to support the SBA department.
- Support SBA Relationship Managers in assessing SBA eligibility per current SBA SOP.
- Maintain a working knowledge of SBA loan programs.
- Analyze personal and business credit data, financial statements, and tax returns with financial ratio analysis.
- Request and review additional information such as accounts receivable aging, accounts payable aging, financial projections, and related reports.
- Prepare and recommend credit packages for management and the loan committee.
- Maintain all credit file data in an organized manner using Gesa underwriting and record‑keeping software.
- Demonstrate general knowledge of construction and leasehold improvement loans.
- Assist team members to meet borrower expectations and departmental goals.
- Participate in special projects assigned by SBA management.
- Pull and review credit reports for business and personal borrowers/guarantors.
- Attend external training, seminars, webinars, and other development opportunities.
- Submit SBA related forms and documents, including tax transcripts, CAIVRS data, and other required documents.
- Communicate with borrowers to complete SBA forms 1919 and 413 when necessary.
- Assist the SBA Loan Production Assistant/Closer with ordering appraisals, real estate evaluations, market research, UCC searches, environmental reports, and title reports.
- Review credit approval documents and ensure all documentation is complete.
- Maintain tickler system and send requests for updated financial statements and tax returns.
- Assist in preparing letters of interest, loan commitment letters, and portfolio monitoring activities.
- Understand and perform Bank Secrecy Act functions as applicable.
- Attend credit‑union training sessions, conferences, or seminars approved by the supervisor.
- Maintain awareness of policies, regulations, and Gesa member‑business lending procedures.
- Demonstrate support of corporate values, mission, and vision while performing job duties.
- Maintain confidentiality of sensitive data and respect diversity.
- Manage responsibilities, control risk, and act with integrity.
- Experience performing financial statement and tax return analysis and calculating financial ratios.
- Ability to provide knowledgeable, professional, friendly service to all members.
- Up‑to‑date knowledge of credit‑union products, SBA SOP, services, and policies.
- Strong oral and written communication, analytical, and research skills.

- Four‑year college degree or equivalent experience; specialized courses preferred.
- 1–2 years of commercial credit analysis or related experience.
- Ability to work under pressure and manage workflow for high‑level member service.
- Proficiency with MS Office, Outlook, and commercial lending platforms.
- Some travel may be required.
